I'm a brand new Gardner and questioning if this is enough soil for all plants or do others need more? Specifically asking about green beans, this is enough soil to grow in? Planning on planting rattlesnake beans with this method.

Perfect timing! I'm seed starting indoors now to restart a raised bed from a previous homeowner this spring that's been, uh, "resting" for a couple years, lol. I de-weeded it well last fall and the poor thing is 40% moss-covered now, so this'll be a fun mystery to solve! Really appreciate having a knowledgeable fellow Marylander, it's hard to thread that needle of when to start and when to transplant.

I really enjoy your channel. Thank you! I am doing raised beds for the first Tim this year. I filled them with 50/50 compost and top soil. When planting would I also use an organic fertilizer, or will the compost be enough? Thank you

My 12" deep raised beds are full after adding 3" of compost and mulch. What do you suggest for next year? Do I remove some soil and add more compost or add additional height (6") to the beds?

This comment doesn't exactly pertain to this video but I've watched 90% of your videos as I begin my own garde and you've been a huge help. Quick question: can I plant green lentils anywhere around tomatoes or is this a bad idea?

Thanks so much Gary. I built raised beds this winter that are about 11 inches tall. Is it OK to plop the dirt and compost right on top of the sod, assuming drainage isn’t an issue, or do I need to do either cardboard over it or turn it over? Thank you!

I don't know what the treated lumber here in California is treated with but it does NOT look like that, and if I ever get a splinter from it it gets really nasty and starts to fester. Whatever it is they treat it with, I'm not growing food anywhere near it. That said, I am very fortunate to be able to get redwood for comparable prices and it lasts just as long and is 100% all natural and biodegradable.

One thing I would add, when you first described the sizes of your beds you were a bit confusing. I would say beds should not be more than four feet wide, and the length can be as long as you want, within reason. I have two 4×10' beds and two 4×12', with 2-3' between them in case I need to get something like a wheelbarrow through to the back. They are 2-2×6's high and there's one cross piece in the center to keep the sides from bowing out. Otherwise, they're super easy to build. Oh, and I used stainless steel screws so they don't rust. 😉

Congrats on 200 000 subscribers! I know you were looking forward to the milestone. Also, awesome start to the homestead garden and a great informative video as usual!

Thanks for the video! I just started my raised beds, and several neighborhood cats keep using them as a litter box 🙁 I tried using a liquid fence to deter them with smell, but they just walked right over it the same day I sprayed when I was not there. I am growing tomatoes, lettuce, and peppers. I try to dig out the cat poop, but I have heard nothing will grow there. Any suggestions that would protect all my babies, and still allow me access to garden?

Hey Gary, about how soon after putting down the cardboard and soil can you plant? I'm making a raised Container garden this year with totes that have the bottoms cut out. (can't afford pressure treated wood this year and I got the totes for free). I want to go ahead and start getting them ready this week, but I will be planting the first week of April, so I'm wondering if 2 weeks will be enough time, or if I should punch a few holes in the cardboard for the roots to start going through down into the ground beneath. Will be planting peppers, tomatoes, and tomatillos in them.

I just built my raised beds and filled them with soil this last weekend! I put a little extra effort into making them 2 feet tall, in hopes that I will be more motivated to manage weeding if it is less of a burden to bend down as far.
