I wanted to arrange the garden, but I have a problem: in one point there are 5/6 wells close together. How can I copy or mask them?
Dear Stefania,
when we are going to somehow cover the wells in the garden, we must unfortunately always remember that our covering devices can never be permanent; this is because the wells were made for a very specific purpose; some give access to the house drains, others cover meters or parts of the irrigation system or other types of systems of various kinds. Whatever system it is, the existence of a pit makes it possible to access the system itself, for checks, repairs and maintenance. So whatever you want to put on the pits, it must be able to be removed very quickly and without great effort, whenever it is necessary to access the inside of the pit. Generally, the best way to mask a sump is to cover it with a vase. Since it would be advisable for a pot on a well not to be excessively heavy, plastic bowls are often chosen, which offer the possibility of having a large space to grow, without excessive weight to move when necessary. There are many products of excellent quality on the market, and also of various colors, depending on the style of your garden. If you do not want to give up terracotta in any way, some pot companies produce vases in a material consisting of a mixture of terracotta and plastic, very light but also a little porous; or there are vases in metal wire, covered with terracotta, which are very resistant, large and also light. I recommend a bowl, because given the needs regarding weight, it would be better you grow small plants in pots, since a shrub over time would tend to take on a fairly large weight, even without calculating the pot. In the bowls you can then plant whatever you prefer: perennials, annuals, geraniums, bulbous plants, tuber plants. It depends on where the wells are positioned and on your tastes in terms of plants, if you plant annuals you will have the advantage / disadvantage of being able to replace them every year; vice versa, if you plant perennials every year they will return to brighten your pots, without the need to plant new ones; since these are some pots, you can also think about sowing some plants with an easy result, such as purslane or surfinia. To keep the wells clean, it would also be advisable to equip the jars with a saucer, so that the water from the irrigation flows into that and not directly into the well.
