Agriculture is what made us move from hunter-gatherers to civilised humans. The Agricultural Revolution gave birth to cities, to empires, to states and to governments.

Throughout the ages, agriculture has evolved. During the industrial revolution, people could plant crops and rear animals with more efficiency. The scientific revolutions gave us pesticides and GMOs.

But one thing which didn’t change during all these years is Land. We still need land to plant. Actually a plant doesn’t require soil to grow. It needs Carbon Dioxide, Water, nutrients and light. One way to make farming more efficient is building vertical farms, that is , indoor farming or hydroponic farming.

Vertical farming will also help fight climate change if it is integrated with renewable energies, it will help fight overpopulation since less land will be needed for farming.

This is the prelude to the edutainment series on vertical farming.

Before we can understand why we might want vertical farms, we need to understand the problem with current agriculture and how it effects key global issues such as global warming and water security. As critical as farming has been for humanity, scaling up the production of outdoor crops poses big questions around how it affects the environment and its sustainability.

This video looks at the current state of agriculture and it’s impact on global challenges such as food security, deforestation, climate change and other issues. It asks what is the cost of continuing with our current method of agriculture.

The next video looks at the viability of different vertical farming methods and asks if vertical farming works.
