I am a big disappointed at the way they're not optimizing the light bulbs. Couldn't they get bulbs that light up less but have reflective stuff placed behind them so they can direct all the light down? Maybe they have done that, but what about the distance the light bulbs have from the vegetables, I hope they have the distance fairly small so they can grow more. And finally, I've heard of light bulbs that use less energy by creating purple light only or blue light only, and still have the intensity of sunlight. This is good, and I hope it's cheaper than "regular" strawberries, and I hope it grows to more crops, like rice and wheat.?

I have an interesting idea, what if you have LED lights inside of a normal green house? so during the day you let sunlight shine on your crops saving money, then when it starts to get dark you turn on the LEDS and run them through the night, that would save 50% energy costs whilst not effecting growth to much.?

Hey there! Have you heard about – Maxim Earth 4 Energy (do a google search)? Ive heard some awesome things about it and my mate got excellent results with it. ?

  • walter0bz

    thats a really terrible idea.
power grow-lights->photosynthesis->biofuel to power something else

its like saying, "lets use an electric motor to power a generator"
scary thing is many voters would go for that "ah its green tech, we're saved!"

  • mieliav

one thing no one mentions is the electric cost. I respect their reduction of water use (not that it means much almost anywhere in europa) but replacing sunlight w/ electricity seems like this system will all be about new trendy restaurants, not about feeding more people.
also, there are theories that say that one of the worst things we can do is feed more people.
finally, of course pena is right: this space looks just like 'sea of green' wh/ the dutch are and were champs at!

@Durendal33 oh well. if I win the lotto I'll build one in my provence and have 1 or 2 floors to experment on my biofuel idea.

I was just thinking about your carben footprint comment, I would love to see people use this idea if they lived somewhere that's winter most of the year or some hard to reach area like in the mountians where it would cost more to ship food up the hill than to grow it in a virtical farm. (or inside the mountian)

@EuroSon99 I'm not sure but I think the plants on voyager were mostly used to help make oxygen, but I'm sure neelix grew some plants to use too. (he was alwase aganst replicating food)

  • EuroSon99

@EscapeArtist86, Lol. Yes, they also grew plants on the voyager episodes. Not on this large scale though with plants packed together. They didn't use special lights either.
