    I don't see how that plant would live. Mixing  potting soil in a perlite vermiculite grow media would not only kill the roots, but the perlite and vermiculite has no nutrients. Simply using water would not make this plant grow. Adding nutients would kill it due to the tray you have underneath because the tray would collect the mix and create algae.
