The Great Green Wall is an African-led project with an epic ambition: to grow an 8,000km line of plants and trees across the entire African continent. Its goal is to provide food, jobs and a future for the millions of people who live in a region on the frontline of climate change.

“When you look out over a tropical forest, or even the weeds in your garden, it’s easy to see little more than a green wall. But each of these species has a story to tell…” This Biosphere 2 mini-documentary highlights the natural history and cultural uses of a few of the plant species growing in the tropical forest biome. The stories reference research in the Biosphere 2 laboratory, cultural practices of Amazonian indigenous people, and I show a couple of clips from my work in the Amazon forest.
