Homesteading is all about trying new things and learning from the process. We did an experiment in how to plant potatoes in the winter for a spring harvest to see if it would work. The experiment is now complete! We harvested our potato crop. Well, half of the winter planted potatoes anyway. We will dig the other half in a week or so and the spring plants when they die back as is the normal time to dig potatoes. There were quite a few potatoes in the one row we dug. If there were more potatoes to plant, we would love to be able to use the Massey Ferguson Tractor to dig them. There is a 3 point digger attachment for the tractor, but we do not have one. After all is said and done, we harvested about 50lbs of potatoes from one row so we will catt the experiment a success. After a successful harvest, we will rototill the row, planting the same row back with more potatoes for one more crop this year. A fall crop. That makes this doubly successful – being able to plant an early and a late crop of spuds. The garden is slowly coming together. Gardening is a lot of work when it is being broken out of native ground! The soil is good, but not overly fertile so the yield was a bit on the low side I would say.
Now we have plenty of potatoes for food and we will be looking up lots of new healthy recipes on the food network and elsewhere to see if we can find new recipes to cook.
