Wouldn’t it be wonderful to hear these words come out of the mouths of your residents patients and staff when they describe the view?
“Incredible”
“Unique natural”
“Peaceful”
“Uplifting”
“Wonderful”
At this senior living community, a modestly sized green roof is having a not so modest impact on staff and residents alike.
The Village at the Pines is luxurious senior community catering to those 55 years of age and older. Located in Grand Haven, MI just miles from the singing sand beaches of Lake Michigan; the Village at the Pines is designed for care free independent living. The Village at the Pines includes beautifully landscaped grounds including a thriving green roof over the entry portico. The LiveRoof brand system is an attractive sustainable feature that enhances the view from several apartments and shared areas in the community. As you will hear from several residents and staff members the green roof is simple to care for, invokes feelings of happiness and peace, and leaves a positive impression on current and prospective residents.

Kelvin Miller – Community Director

When we are touring we will take them up to the movie theater on the third floor which would get one of the greatest views of the LiveRoof, then we take them over to the window and have them see the LiveRoof. Yesterday one woman’s comment was “It’s absolutely incredible.”
As you’ll see with some of the residents we’ll talk to they are amazed with it. If they are sitting in their living room, to look out, even though they are on the third story, they are able to look out and see this incredible view. When they have visitors come they’ll take them and…”you have to see my view, you have to see the roof.”

Mary McGinnis – Resident

This was a real wonderful surprise. I tell you, I walked in and said “WOW, what’s that?!” It was a very different looking roof than what I would have expected, and much nicer.

Marie VanHouwelingen – Resident

When I open my blinds in the morning the first view is the flag and the roof garden. I think this is a smart idea. I love the grass; I think that’s so pretty. I love the flowers too. Seeing plants and seeing greenery makes me happy.

Ruth VanDam – Resident

We were lucky to get a nice view. It’s quite lovely, you’re able to look out and see different varieties of flowers instead of just a rooftop. They make me feel good, looking at something that changes. You can take a cup of coffee and either stand at the window or go on the balcony and just enjoy that and look at it.

Marian Zillins – Resident

I noticed that right away out here, there was a garden on top of the roof. That’s really special. I like the sedum in the fall, when it comes out as a pretty light rose color, and it’s so beautiful. It’s a good experience to come out and see that every day it’s changing.

Ann Satter – Resident

We had a choice of three apartments when we came here three years ago, and when they showed us this one that was it, we knew that this was what we wanted. Every morning the first thing I look at is the American flag and the garden. It’s beautiful. We love it. It makes me feel happy. The roof, I just love it.

Prakash Khatiwoda – Groundskeeper

LiveRoof is a well maintained roof. I love it. I always get fresh air when I get up there and they grow like natural. Green roofs look nicer for everybody and it shows the face of the building, just…I love it.

Living Roofs Inc. Installed this residential project at Lake Toxaway, NC utilizing a pre-vegetated system supplied by Xero Flor America. The roof of this residential project has a 3:12 slope, requiring special measures to eliminate the potential for sliding, water loss, and soil erosion. A grid system was bolted to fastened-aluminum edging and filled with soil. The extensive, pre-vegetated roof was selected to both instantly green a highly visible roof and reduce overall weight.
