In 1882, the president of the US was Chester A. Arthur. Here in Hillsborough, North Carolina, USA, was a small town (founded in 1752), the local newspaper (which is still a weekly) was 2 years old. A local school offered 20 week terms for $7.50 for beginner students. A gentleman's shirt could be bought for $1, unlaundered. Add 5 cents more for laundering. and a gardening catalogue of seeds and plants could be ordered all the way from New York city for $1.80 from the Peter Henderson Company. The dentist came to town once a month, and consumption and rheumatism were noteworthy. This all from the local paper.

In 1882, the locally founded newspaper the Grit was started. It then became a national newspaper. The house I am currently living in was approximately 25-30 years old. Lumber was a big local industry. The nearest city at one point in time had more millionaires per capita than any other city. Their high school team is called the Millionaires.

I`ve been using Rootrainers  for 15 years and use them to start off Runner Beans, Sweet Peas and tall peas. You have to be careful using them as they get a little brittle with age. Having said that I have been using the same ones

Cultra is an early maincrop potato. It's a cross from Desiree and Cara and was bred in 1988 at Oakpark agricultural research centre in Carlow.. Carlow is my home town and we used go for walks in the grounds of Oakpark house, now the research centre. Sadly, it's closed to the public nowadays.
Back in 1882 hundreds of locals were employed on the 1500 acre estate ,maybe I'd be working growing vegetables in the walled garden if I hadn't been born 100 years too late .

I had to do a search, but amoung other things:
The North-West Mounted Police (which later became the Royal Canadian
Mounted Police) established a post in 1882 in Regina, Saskatchewan. The
Royal Canadian Mounted Police (R.C.M.P.) have since established their
main training academy there, which is called "Depot", or Depot Division.
