Couldn't you put compost on top of weed block net and then flood underneath the net day to moisten the compost and then let it drain into a compost tea trap and use the compost tea to fertilize. You had aquafina bottles to catch excess water and some aquaponic growing in that naturally fertilized water. I have a sloped area where I am going to garden which I thought was great for drainage. It's the prior owners old garden spot. But now I want to catch the nutrients that are draining off of it to reuse and fertilize. New project for me.

Didn't ancient Egyptians grow lotuses in man made pools. And isn't there an architectural water garden that was discovered from a dig of ancient Babylonia.
