School gardens are improving food security in Fogo island, Cape Verde

The initiative of school gardens on the island of Fogo (Cape Verde) facilitates access to fresh and healthy food for children and young people on the island. It ensures its food security through an activity with a strong educational and sensitizing value, which allows students to become familiar with the crops work and the most favorable production techniques. This is just one of the projects of the Rural Socioeconomic Opportunities Program carried out by the Government of Cape Verde with Spanish funding.

The AECID finances with 7 million Euros to the Program of Rural Socioeconomic Opportunities * POSE *, which started its activities in 2013. The objective of this program is to improve, in a sustainable way, the livelihoods and food and nutritional security of the rural population more vulnerable, mainly women and young people. This program is carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture of Cape Verde with the supervision of the
International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the United Nations agency dedicated to promoting the economic progress of people living in poverty in rural areas. The program is funded by the Spanish Cooperation through the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID).
