From 50 years of experience: How to grow corn, snow & snap peas, carrots, pole beans & zucchini: Organic gardening 101 on watering, mulching and fertilizing: Tips for beginners and homesteaders on easy and productive vegetables to grow from seeds for self sufficiency.
You can grow plenty of fresh delicious vegetables in your backyard garden with a few basic gardening skills, by planting at the right time for your climate, fertilizing and watering properly, and harvesting at the best time.
The best book I’ve found on growing organic vegetables is “Growing Vegetables West of the Cascades: https://amzn.to/2ATBxs9 Especially for maritime climates (like the UK), but the planting, fertilizing, watering and pest information applies anywhere.

Carrots and peas have outstanding flavor and crispness when home grown. Pole beans and zucchini are among the most productive and easy to grow vegetables per square foot. Growing sweet corn takes up more space, but is especially delicious when fresh picked. Green beans, peas and corn can be easily frozen at home to store for winter use. In this video I discuss:
0:00 Grow veggies you like, that grow in your climate, and fit in your space.
0:44 Growing Snow and Snap Peas; Plant early, add bone meal, cage or trellis.
1:33 Growing Carrots; Fine soil, sift compost over seeds, keep moist, thin.
2:32 Growing Zucchini; Plant when warm, fertilize, pick while small.
3:20 Growing Sweet Corn; Fertilize, space 1’+, freezing corn.
4:12 Growing Green Beans; Add bone meal, pick before they get fat.
4:59 Freezing green beans; Blanch 3 mins, cool in ice water.
5:10 Watering; 1” once a week, 2″+ if hot, measure, morning best time.
5:32 Mulch; Smothers weeds, holds in moisture, adds nutrients.
5:52 Weeding; Pull before going to seed, get the roots.
6:09 Soil Ph; Add lime/ashes to acid soil; Most veggies need fertilizer.
I’ve been growing vegetables in Western Washington for 50 years, and in spite of our cool seasons in the Pacific Northwest, similar to the UK and Northern Europe, I grow abundant crops that keep us in fresh and frozen organic veggies all year round.
All vegetables taste better and are more nutritious fresh from the garden. This video has vegetable garden tips for beginners and experienced gardeners, and instructions for 5 of my favorite vegetables that are easy to grow at home and fit in a small productive garden.

Great video. I'm in the Seattle area. If I wanted to plant a second crop of carrots to start harvesting in the fall, when should I plant them in my area? Late July or August? Thanks!
