The Rotary Club of New Lynn worked with the school to create an vegetable garden where children can gain an appreciation of vegetables and learn about nutrition. The garden is to be an outdoor classroom. Interaction in the garden will help pupils with subjects such as science, maths and art. Thirty #ToyotaFamilyLearning participants recently completed a Family Service Learning project in which they planted flowers and greenery around Okolona Elementary School in Louisville, Ky. These families organized the entire project, from brainstorming the idea, requesting funding, sourcing tools and volunteers, and planting the bulbs. “Community projects really help families learn how the community works and how they can be a part of it,” said Cris Howard, family education coordinator. This is Louisville Free Public Library’s and Jefferson County Public Schools’ first year of Toyota Family Learning. More than 140 parents and children enrolled. Louisville is one of 15 communities to become part of Toyota Family Learning. In total, Toyota has committed million over a six-year period for this national education initiative to boost literacy skills, strengthen families, and improve communities. Toyota Family Learning empowers parents and caregivers, as well as their children, to become engaged in their schools and communities. It also leverages technology as parents and children learn together and serve their communities through NCFL’s Family Service Learning approach, Parent and Child Together (PACT) Time®, and family-to-family mentoring.
