What are invasive plant species? What makes them invasive? Do they have any use at all? Where did they come from?

It is interesting to think that most species that are termed invasive where originally introduced to an area on purpose. They didn’t invade on their own, they were brought to an area, found themselves easily adapted to the area, and grew rampantly.

Some were ornamental, some were forage crop, though some were brought in just by the travel of humans.

But can the serve a purpose or do we need to perform plant genocide against these species in their non-native areas.

My mentor instilled in me this idea: If you see a plant in a place that you do not want there, observe it. What does it do and how? Then look at a list of plants that do what it does and how it does it and choose a plant you would rather have there. And then install it as a replacement.
I have had an opportunity not put this to the test, but in theory it makes sense to me. At least more than "spray it to death."

The honeysuckle is invasive in Missouri too. I myself love the bush and vine. But it has taken over some woodlands and consumes other plant. I never had an issue till now. A vine has choked my plumbet tree. So I will have to get it cut down from there. This will be the first time I remove it, Thanks for sharing what you have learned.

I have to really stay focused on field bindweed and creeping buttercup, as well as the gigantic Himalayan blackberries. Our highway department and other agencies will sometimes use goats to control bad infestations of blackberries without chemicals; we have 'goat wranglers' that take their flocks out to blackberry eradication jobs. American holly is also considered an invasive plant in my area, but I sure do like to see them…

There's also confusion between non-native and invasive species. Native species could be considered invasive weeds if they become established in an undesirable place, like you said. Depending on the scale of your operation, there are some things you can control and then there are some things that you probably shouldn't be wasting your time on. For example, I've given up on trying to control dandelions and creeping charlie (ground clover) on my property but I will make sure to control some of the larger invasives like honeysuckle, buckthorn, and black locust (which is native!). Here in Illinois we have a big problem with some of the Asian Honeysuckle varieties, which have really caused some ecological problems in native oak-hickory forest succession.

Kudzu is also a great nutritional for people! Here's my solution….People like you, who want more income streams, hire out your services to someone who has a problem with kudzu or other 'invasive' species. Take your fencing and put it up on whoever hires you land to be treated and take the appropriate animal to eat it up! Make money and feed the horse, goat, pigs.   Pigs will eat a spot of even the roots. Just saying.

I agree that some plants are useful that people call invasive. Some people hate dandelions, but I have added the leaves to salads and one of my aunts used to make dandelion wine from the flowers. Some people hate chickweed but I don't-the flowers are beautiful in the spring. My daughter sees clover as a pain, but I love it in my yard – it helps the soil, looks good and my chickens like it. The same could be said for many other flowers that I like to see growing in my yard and garden.
