Top Five 2016 Gardening Goals: Grow More, Work Less, Spend Less, Learn More, Have More Fun

I expect 2016 to be the beginning of a new era in our garden. We’ve cleared trees, expanded the garden over most of the back yard, and built raised beds, trellises, and a hoop house. Now it’s time to slow down and enjoy the fruits of our labor. Starting in 2016, and for the next several years, we hope to grow more, work less, spend less, learn more, and have more fun.

One Yard Revolution is all about growing a lot of food on a little land using sustainable organic methods, while keeping costs and labor at a minimum. Emphasis is placed on improving soil quality with compost, mulch, and compost tea. No store-bought fertilizers, soil amendments, pesticides, compost activators, etc. are used.

Sounds like some sensible goals. I laughed a little when you said, " no major projects for 7-10 yeas". Sure hope that happens for you. Seems like we as gardeners/homeowner/people are always wanting the next thing. Especially if you open a catalog, enter a store, or watch TV, YouTube, etc. I think it is awesome that you plan to "sit back", and be satisfied with what you have made. Enjoy life… such as it is.

Amazing how food you get out of your yard…we got the garden in last year and some more fruit trees. We will be adding some more fruit trees and blueberry bushes this year. What are the advantages to having the hoop house in the green house…i`ve never seen that…amazing work by the way and very inspiring!

letting things go to seed in SW allows me to have flowering plants in late winter and draws early bees who I hope learn my yard and come back for more .

Our goal this year is to expand our growing space by 128 sq feet bring us to 205 sq feet. So far we have added 32 sq feet from scrap lumber but still looking for soil. We are also trying to be more productive in the spring and fall. There is also a plan for fruit trees on a family members property near by.

I can't believe I never ran across this channel. It is perfect for me. I live in Minnesota zone 4a and my 1/3 acre yard has 12 very large trees in the south side and neighbors with two large ones in the west plus a cottage (former carriage house) also in the west. The house is in the east, so I have a lot of shade but I do have an area with 4-5 hours of sun where I can grow not very productive hardy tomatoes. I also have a small area between my yard and neighbor's with lots of sun, which I turned into a bed last year. I was finally able to grow squash. I looked through all the videos and I will be spending a LOT of time here as I prepare for the new year. I started some artichoke seeds (try every year and once got two artichokes, lol), leeks, shallots, and onions inside. I have a seed starting area in my basement that can handle 12 regular tray at a time and a pretend hoop house. I will be trying to build the real thing with your videos this year. This is the third one I watch today and I am impressed. Thanks. My cat also helps in the yard. He has his own catnip gardens. I planted one plant years ago and he has managed to spread it all over the yard by rolling on the plants when they are going to seed. His main one is about 15 square feet so he usually just hangs out there.

Woohoo, great job Patrick. If you get chickens, (which I hope you can), make sure you check the local laws and if you haven't heard about Backyard Chickens, the have some great advice on their forums.

great job!  Goals are to expand my storage crops, like onions, potatoes, and garlic.  Cut back on high yield summer squash, and pumpkins.  There are only so many I can eat and give away.

Wonderful Goals for 2016!  I value the same goals.  Imagine if everyone followed in your footsteps towards gardening… How nice would that be.  Happy gardening!

  • OhHowHappyGardener

I like your goals! My goal is to get a large garden established and grow enough food to benefit my family, including our extended family living nearby.

  • ToughLoveTV

1:05 Makes me just wanna do a couple of huge laps through there & harvest like there's no tomorrow.

I LOVE that your goals involve doing less, once you've gotten several larger goals out of the way.
Not many ppl think that far ahead, or if they do, they rarely fulfill those original forecasts.

Congratulations, Paul is sitting humming along with your theme song….that's huge.   Everything looks so tasty.  Sitting here with 12 humble boc choi  plants, two stevia plants and a rosemary bush inside  while everything is at a standstill under hoops outside.  So cold here at night but of course mache has become an invasive LOL so it will provide well once the spring sun starts to show itself in late winter and mature celery plants are surprisingly holding  on too.  You may have answered this already, are you going to keep the green house up during the summer and just remove the plastic?    You should be proud you have accomplished so much in such a short time…clearly remember your first video.
