Life off the Grid.
Our dream has always been to retire to a property in the country, completely off the grid, sothat we could learn to manage our own existence. Generate the power that we consume. Catch the rainwater that we need. And grow the food that we eat.
But when we found this property, we realised;
– “Why wait until we retire?; Let’s do it Now, while we can still enjoy the adventure!”.
So in 2013, we moved our small family from an innner city townhouse, to a 1/2 acre property, completely Off The Grid. We had No Idea what we were in for. The first 6 months were the hardest. Power, water and heating issues. In the middle of winter, with a newborn baby.
Two years certainly has taught us alot about who we are, and out place on this planet; And what it REALLY takes to live without suckling on the Beauracratic and Corporate teats of our civilisation.
This Channel is primarily a Journal to document our lives and the changes to our property.
And hopefully give us something funny to watch when we’re old and grey.

We use our chickens before the planting season to prepare the garden beds and in the fall to clean up. I really like this idea and I think I might try it. I'll have to create a small fence inside the fenced garden for the spinach, my favorite.

Are these types of chickens flighty? I only have a 4 ft chain link fence around my garden.
that's a great idea to have the chickens do the weeding for you, but don't you worry about them nibbling on the veggies?
If my garden area was fenced I would try the same thing. I think they will be a big help eating a lot of the pests too.

Will these little girls end up as food themselves eventually? Or are they for egg production? Or something else??
I think it is a good trade off. A few plants and tomatoes and the silkies patrol for insects and weed clearing. Good idea! Gives me some food for thought! Thanks! Steve
Do your chickens ever have predator problems? Here in Britain our main concerns are foxes and stoats, rats and crows/ravens steal our eggs. Even seagulls do, in fact. Then the main pest that is being exterminated from the country is the Minks, as they are VERY dangerous to livestock. We don't see them here though.
