Is Chicago running the equivalent of a CIA ‘black site?’ UK newspaper The Guardian has published a report on Homan Square in Chicago, a site where suspects are said to be held without access to lawyers or family and interrogated off-the-books.
Anti-NATO protester Jacob Church says he was shackled to a bench for 17 hours, interrogated and denied legal counsel at Homan Square in 2012.
Church is not alone. Others also tell of people who’ve disappeared in Homan Square and only re-emerged after someone made a stink at City Hall.
Homan Square detainees say arrests were not recorded, police beatings caused head wounds, shackling for prolonged periods was common and people as young as 15 were held for as long as 24 hours without access to legal aid.
Jacob Church was paroled in 2014 and spoke to the media. After reports by the Guardian Chicago officials finally acknowledged its existence but said the site is a simply a ‘secure location’ for undercover work. Whose story do you believe?

There was also one man, John Hubbard, who died within Homan Square from heroin intoxication.
"On February 2, 2013, John Hubbard was taken to Homan Square. Hubbard never walked out. The Chicago Tribune reported that the 44-year old was found “unresponsive inside an interview room”, and pronounced dead. After publication, the Cook County medical examiner told the Guardian that the cause of death was determined to be heroin intoxication."
