When planning something as permanent as a hedge be sure to choose wisely. In Ontario Common Buckthorn is an invasive species with consequences to soil and surrounding plants. You can read more here : http://www.invadingspecies.com/common-buckthorn/ or check your local agricultural department website for invasive species in your area.
I have made raised beds out of the drawers from dressers (usually funky) that are left on the sidewalk/pavement after a person is done w it. Up for grabs is a great price. Also used an abandoned filing cabinet laid on its back. Drill (or axe) holes in it at ground level. Fill w good dirt + compost. Bingo! A 4 sectioned veggie bed.
Definitely saving seeds! I've just started getting into this over the past couple of years. This way you can select for the best varieties for your climate too. Also, get pieces of established perennials from other local gardeners. Online sites like Freecycle and Kijiji have been fantastic to use for this purpose. Gardeners need to divide their perennials anyway, and you are getting a plant that is already used to your local climate. It's a win-win!
Can I post your videos at my community garden Facebook page?
Another couple of suggestions, especially for starting bushes or trees from seed, a wine bottle waterer and rain water collection where legal.
Really good tips. Although I dislike using plastic bottles etc to cover plants as plastic releases micro plastic and it will be found in the soil. Just hate the stuff now after learning about it despite it being reusable.
Thumbs up !
next tip, live next to a prolific gardener and become his friend
I've learned there is a free class at department of agriculture for learning how to become a Master Gardner as well as a Bee Keeper. I'm wanting to take both of these classes but I was told they want $250 for miscellaneous expenses which isn't alot of money except for TWO classes I'll need $500 and I just helped replace the furnace in my parents' house. Expenses add up fast at Christmas, and I just came to see that no one has supplies in the house. So, when I see videos telling me how to plant a garden on a dime, I definitely watch! One thing I wanted to ask is how to prevent mold when I'm trying to reuse a seed? I've seen ways of starting the seeds in a baggie wrapped in a paper towel but that's not always a good turnout when it's time to plant. Help! Romaine lettuce and tomatoes have been recalled for contamination and a few years ago even garbanzo beans had a 50 state recall for listeria in hummus so I just want to raise my own food. I've done it as a kid, but I had brain surgery and don't remember everything. Memory isn't coming back 100% yet. Drs. say it will take time.
