In an open center apple tree the vertical branches when leafed out will block the sun from riping the apples. They also take much needed energy away from the production of healthy trees and the fruit. Usually you would remove them when they are small during the growing season. Cut them off cleanly without damaging the collar around the base of all stems, before they would use any energy. On this dwarf Rome apple tree you can see that all of the blossoms are on the outward lower horizontal branches and very few blossoms on on the vertical branches of the tree. There are none on the water shoots. Oh you are from central Va. I live in Manassas. Yea. I understand from other YT channels that vertical
Shoots don't grow apples, sort of but I would like to try growing "vertical axius" trees for the sport of it. Most of my newly bought trees are being trained with horizontal branches .There is a lot of conflicting info. On promoting fruiting buds. Apparently depends on the Apple variety from pulled down branches, horizontal to 45 degree branches

Thanks. I wasn't aware of this. Will the water shoot deal apply to other fruit trees, or just apples?
