Thanks to you I wouldn’t have started my first experience of growing any vegetables, I have the transplants outside some not very happy and more happier ones. My question is the soil is hard and rough to the touch but not dry

HOT TIP: Ask your local Home Depot (or equivalent) if they sell ripped/torn bags at a discount. At my local home depot they pile on half a dozen bags of ripped soil bags onto a cart and sell the whole thing for 5 bucks.

Peat moss can acidify your soil. Which generally most plants thrive in slightly acidic soil!

    which zone you in Gary?

Completely wrong, you should look into no dig/till systems, it'll be easier, more successful, and much fewer weeds. You've completely destroyed the soil food web. Leave the grass down and just build the bed on top much better for the garden and the planet.
