My first outdoor hydroponic grow. The plants were just planted. This system can easily grow about 24 plants which means fresh veggies all year, hundreds of tomatoes and lots of fun! Explanation of how to build it and how it works. This system is inexpensive to set up and really produces. To see how the plants turned out check out this video 3 months later http://youtu.be/s5jZkBSZ2I8 . A slightly improved the design I just built can be found here http://youtu.be/ZwImqt3Em8g. Step-by-step instructions and a list of all materials can be found at http://awesomenessprojects.com/

do you think a rail system like yours would be suitable for Cannabis?
What size water pump do you use and is it on a timer or does it run continous?
YOUR SET IS REALLY KIND OF COMPLICATED TO ME I WILL TRY SOMEONE ELSE, THANKS
Makinghydroponics seems like difficult especially when you have no experience, but it is not.
How did you get the end caps to seal? I found that they fit a bit loose..
plastic cups leach chemicals from heat.
The issue with hydroponics is that you will have to pay for "plant food" or nutrition and supplements which are costly.
Next time try drilling a drainage whole at the bottom on the far end where u are running drainage hose cut a square out of the vinyl right above the drainage whole so u can trim any roots that wanna reach down into your drain pipe…. k so what u do once you have those two holes cut at the far end u wanna drain out of stick a 1and 3/4 inch PVC pipe in the bottom of the vinyl post in the small whole u drilled, with a rubber grommet around it so that it doesn't leak… then you can raise and lower your water level within the vinyl post 😉 very helpful for not drowning your roots, and SUPER!!! helpful to get that water level full in the vinyl post so that you can put new young plants in there with not as much of a root system yet. just a helpful tip bro 420!! :p
Where did you buy that square pipe ?
I just wanted to say thanks to all of the people who have commented. By popular request I put the plans for how to build the system up for free on AwesomenessProjects.com
Dixie cups will crack and break
Not sure about cucumbers. The water fills up the fence posts nearly to the top but not totally. You want some air at the top to improve oxygen diffusion in to the water.
Has anyone figured out how to get cucumbers to grow? Also, the water fills up the fence posts completely? Is that correct?
Nice, but a steady camera would be a huge improvement.
hello what did you use to seal your end caps? what kind of sealant?
Haven't had any problem with algae, and have been using the system for 3 years now. Not enough light gets into the system the way it is set up for it to cause a problem.
I've used cheap nutrients and expensive nutrients, and they all seem to work the same. Just buy the cheapest powdered nutrients you can get. I live in Northern California, so most non-tropical plants grow fine.
Yes, the pump runs 24/7. The advantage of this type of system is that even if the power goes out, the system is good for a few days.
Nothing happens if it rains. Just be sure to cover all electronic pieces in something waterproof. I used a ziplock bag that I zip tied on both ends.
