When you decide to adopt a dog, you need to give it a comfortable kennel. Those on the market are expensive, so it’s better to build a wooden kennel. First of all, it is always advisable to draw a project on a sheet, indicating the measures of the kennel, depending on the size of the dog and the space available. Then you have to buy the materials: you will need a wooden board to use as a square base; two boards for the sides; a board for the back and one for the front, which will be cut to a point; two rectangular boards for the roof and four boards of the measure. First you have to take the four tablets and nail them under the base, so as to form feet, that is, solid supports. Then you have to fix the two side boards to the base with a hammer and nails; then the turn of the front and rear boards. Before fixing the front one, you have to cut out the opening with the saw. Finally, you have to fix the roof and close all the cracks with transparent silicone. After having passed some non-toxic paint of the color we prefer, the kennel is ready.

For build a doghouse for outdoor dogs, some factors must be taken into account: first of all, the materials to be used must be carefully chosen as the panels must guarantee thermal insulation to our puppy, both from heat and from cold. For this reason it is recommended to use, for example, a 3 cm thick pine panel, with a cavity inside. Then you have to consider the shape of the kennel: to let the water flow and drain, the side panels must have a different height to ensure a certain slope, while the front and rear ones will be trapezoidal in shape. Furthermore, it is useful to fix wooden or rubber feet under the base of the kennel to isolate the kennel from the ground. To assemble all the pieces of the house it is better to use self-tapping screws, inserted with the electric screwdriver. To protect the kennel from the rain, a non-toxic waterproofing product must then be passed over the entire structure; if you want, you can also cover the roof with tiles, so as to embellish the house and ensure better thermal insulation.

After having drawn a project, you can proceed by first making the opening of the house: with a pencil and a ruler you have to trace the profile on the front panel and then cut it out with a hacksaw. To make the edges smooth, it is advisable to sand it; then proceed by fixing the feet under the base of the kennel; then we move on to the assembly phase of the pieces. First you need to fix the side walls to the rear one, using screws and a screwdriver. Then the structure thus created will be fixed to the front panel, the one with the opening. Finally, everything must be fixed to the base. The final stage includes lining the kennel with a waterproofing product and painting to color and embellish it.

The fundamental phase when building a dog kennel is the project: on a sheet you have to draw the house with all the relative measures. If the measurements are wrong, in fact, you risk throwing away all the material if the panels have already been cut. The size of the dog must be based on the size of the kennel: if, for example, the dog is half a meter tall, the kennel must be at least one meter high and equally deep. However, we must not exaggerate with the size, because otherwise in winter the dog could suffer from the cold in a kennel that is too large: in this sense, it is advisable to make the opening of the house wide enough for the dog to enter, so as to avoid heat loss in winter. The kennel, therefore, must be large enough for the dog to move comfortably inside, but without exaggerating. For the shape, you have to adjust according to the space you have available and according to your tastes: as an alternative to the sloping roof, it can also be made rectangular, by fixing a horizontal panel above the structure, building a small house in the shape of a parallelepiped .
