The last 2 years I have grown sugar baby watermelons vertically in michigan with fairly good success. I used repurposed wrought iron porch rails, 2 buried in the ground vertically, and 2 placed in between at about 18 and 30 inches off the ground. I placed the melons on the horizontal rails as if they were racks. I planted 2 vines per corner for a total of 8 vines. I find that it's best to only let 2 melons per vine rippen. Any more than that and they don't like to finish before summer is over. Good luck everyone!
