In our new series, Outliers, VICE explores worlds beyond the economic mainstream, meeting people who’ve chosen unusual and sometimes radical relationships to money, commerce and capitalism. For our first episode we headed to Virginia, where a cluster of communes thrives in rural, conservative Louisa County.

In exchange for working around 40 hours a week, Twin Oaks’ roughly 100 residents get everything taken care of, free of charge, from food to housing to health insurance. But the community is able to provide so generously because of their successful businesses; for over thirty years, they produced every hammock sold at Pier One and today, they sell tofu to Whole Foods.

We traveled to Twin Oaks to learn what life is like at the communal fringes of capitalism.

wow this looks soo boring,, I hate gardenwork most in the world,,(and hammockwork), I believe in nomadism… all thoose alternative lifestylevideos is soo focused on their sweet little houses and comunities etc…. after two weeks I would just scream straight out and start running not looking back

Not for a second, only want to live off grid to be more capitalist, not needing anyone else for my survival would ensure nobody gets the wrong idea that they have to help others.

Essentially. The way the community works and uses money within the community isn't capitalism. But the way their products are sold is still capitalism. It seems great tbh, except I would definitely need some more recreational activities and places to chill that I didn't see in the video.

I like people. But I don't want to spend the rest of my time lounging around.

#CooperativeSocialism is the way to go, worldwide for a moneyless world. How to start small and make it big is the challenge? We need to start with one industry and make it successfull , and then move on to another industry… Just imagine Electric vehicle / Electric bike – Assume the scientists and experts unite and create an EV ecosystem to deliver affordable Electric bike (say for less than $500 dollars that can give a minimum range of 300 kms per 1 hour of charging. This will become a hit worldwide and it can capture 95% market, while the rest of the manufacturers will get 5% market.. Thats how we can eliminate money from the society, by eventually making the ebike available for Free, as all essential products and services will be a basic human right, guaranteed in the World Constitution.. Sounds simple, right ?

I grew up a Venice and Santa Monica kid, I've been around these CULTS, Synanon, Hari Krishna, Zendik Farm CULTS. Someone at the top always hustling and others getting hustled. New versions of very old scenes. The illusion of freedom underlying stifling control. I have good friends that have left CULTS after many years of devotion try to recreate their lives and the children that are born into CULTS. Let VICE show that.

I dont understand the hateful comments its alright if you enjoy life loving to a goal different to others but this this right here gives me hope it makes me feel less pressure less desire to die just to leave the constructs ik id never be happy in it gives me hope in a slower more peaceful life like i wish for im a teenager and have often recurring existential breakdowns about things i cant control and seeing possibilities of unitized communities to work together for your community and be thanked with the things i need to survive and some this is the dream to me to just have a close community that gives and gives and only gives id just be so much happier it seems so nice to me but again its ok if you want to life life different than i but please dont tell me im too young to know what i want in life im not far at all from adulthood

Capitalism is more about freedom then people think. That's why a society such as this hasn't done away with it. Capitalism is not called a "FREE MARKET SOCIETY" for nothing.

Hey John – Great video! Super helpful. I'll share this with my family farm. Mind checking out FuelCred (www.FuelCred.com)? I think this product could be interesting for your audience. Let me know if you have any interest!

Thank you for this boss, it's great to see someone share such valuable information. This is all typically where the majority of new businesses fail and as a result, close down. Cheers.

Do you use any balance sheet accounts? You listed the capital expense accounts, but didn't list any asset or liability accounts. It looks like this list might just be a subset of your accounts that are used on the P&L. I know a lot of farmers use cash basis accounting and balance sheets are a bit less useful in that case. However, I really think that balance sheets are critical for understanding the value of your business and how to improve it over the long term.
