Cool, thanks. I'm going to try this. I don't like the idea of the wasted space of growing them on the ground, and the pumpkins getting funky on one side from the dirt.

LOL, I have this vision of someone in a movie wandering around under a pumpkin-vine growing along a tree branch, which suspenseful music plays and we all wonder if or when a pumpkin will drop on the unsuspecting person! 😉

That's interesting that they got that big and were still hanging on. good to know, thanks!

Hi, about the pumpkin- one year we had thrown an old O eve pumpkin guts into a horse poop pile to one side of our land (live in a forest area). The vines did go up a tree that was near by and we did end up having a pumpkin grow within the tree line. I would say that got to be about ten pounds before we decided to pull it down- out of worrying someone would get hit on the head by it(We also had to use a ladder to reach it).

Yes, that COULD happen. That being said, I didnt have any problems yet. What you would want to do is to make a sling (or hammock) with some pantyhose to support the squash. That being said, I grew bananna squash on a trellis and they were like 20-30# each.. with no added support. As the fruit grows slowly, so does the stem its attached to, and it gets stronger.

John, is there any risk of the squash getting so heavy that they break off the vine? Like, could a pumpkin be grown this way without falling off, or would I need to support it somehow? It seems like I've heard of people using old pantyhose to make hammocks to support large squash.

@growingyourgreens yup thats the stuff. I think im going to try tomato cages for my cucumbers and the road mesh for the squash. I'm glad I found this video I never knew you could do squash and stuff like this. thanks much mate. good luck to you this growing season.

  • SPCkeith

how would this work with say road mesh? (super sized chicken wire.) I was setting up 6ft long sections with fence posts on the end for blackberries and such. do you think that would work too? I have limited flat space in my garden and butternuts always start to rot with heavy rains. thanks for any advice you can give me.

i agree… the great thing about gardening is the curiosity of my neighbors.. i love them asking me question and that gave me the opportunity to tell them about gmo etc.. and i gave them seeds and they give their seeds to other neighbors and now they all grow their own garden… its awesome
when i have friends come over their like what is that! LOL

Great video Misilla. I had my collards bolt early due to malnutrition. I pinched them back enough to get 2 harvests out of them but they began to taste bitter so I had to pull them.

  • MiWilderness

Wow! You've got all kinds of stuff growing. That trellis looks real nice. I would let the tomato plant fruit, it looks a lot bigger than 7" in the video.
