Dr. Storey. Thanks for the information.
Hi Vivian,
Greenwalls can shade buildings, and also act as a giant "swamp cooler" as the plants actively transpire. As they lose water through their leaves, the plants are able to cool themselves down, as well as the wall behind them, forming a cool air layer against the building.
Nice system! very neat and organized. In a hydroponics system not aquaponics how do you feed the nutrients to the plants? Directly in the water loophole?
Hi Vivian, this is a great question. I'd encourage you to submit it on our forum too! forum(dot)verticalfoodblog(dot)com – We'll get it answered for you there!
Hi, I'm doing a project on green walls and I was wondering how heat loss occurs through green walls
We just chop 1/2" poly tubing into short lengths, fold the 1/4" tubing over on itself, and slide the 1/2" ring around the folded end. It's super easy and super cheap and we can always make more in the greenhouse as we inevitably lose them.
Hi,
You bet, we'll try to get that video in the lineup and do some more informative plumbing videos on things like the greenwall. Thanks for the advice!
You bet! Apartment green walls are not only a crowd pleaser, but they can significantly increase your household nutrition while decreasing your grocery bill! You can grow inside using very energy efficient lighting which you can either run all day long (giving your plants so much light they'll grow like crazy!) or just run it every so often throughout the day. We'll be talking more about setting up your own green wall with lights in future videos! Message if you can't wait and we'll help you out
I live in a New York apartment how can I do this vertical wall? Is sun a big factor, can this be done inside. I want to do 6 towers lined up on the wall year round?
Yes, it flows back to the sump (the 35 gal. barrel). Right now we're just filling the system off of our AP system, goldfish are going in this week.
WHere is the water going after it runs through the towers? Into the 35 gallon barrel? Then what?
Cool idea. I'm very interested in 2 things…#1 – I live in upstate NY and would love too see how well this insulates the greenhouse. Pics in Dec or Jan are definitely a must! #2 – can you please do a video on the "trickling" system you use. The little hoses all coming from the larger hose…where do you find these types of hoses and how do they connect? Thanks for some awesome videos!
Do you have anything special to kink the emitters, or just rubber bands? Another possible option for yourself or others is to us golf tees. We plug those into our individual emitters when we bring a tower to the farmer's market and they work great!
The greenwall dead-ends off the our AP system. Basically it uses the nutrient rich water from the system without recirculating back to the main system. We'll put goldfish in it soon and then it will basically be a mini-system tied into our main one.
I'm a little confused. Is the green wall a closed loop system that you initially loaded from the aquaponic system or is it actually recirculating through the aquaponic system? Your explanation seemed to be saying it's a closed loop system.
