Edge Cities, which are the urban nodes on the edge of major cities, will become resilient or irrelevant in the next twenty years. To become resilient to future natural catastrophes, economic change and social disruption, Edge Cities like Tyson’s Virginia must become ecodistricts. As ecodistricts they will create sustainable and resilient infrastructure and social equity networks. Dan Slone is national counsel for the U.S. Green Building Council, the World Green Building Council and EcoDistricts. He is on the board of the Congress for the New Urbanism. Dan previously served on the boards of the Resilient Design Institute and BioRegional North America (One Planet Communities), the Eco Industrial Development Council, Green Roofs for Healthy Cities, the Form-Based Codes Institute and the National Charrette Institute. He has spoken around the world and written several chapters in books, including two chapters in Eco-Industrial Strategies – Unleashing Synergy Between Economic Development and the Environment. He co-authored A Legal Guide to Urban and Sustainable Development. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
