BicycleSPACE led a DC School Garden Tour recently– a trip that brought participants to 5 area schools where gardening has become an important part of the curriculum for students. Representatives from each of the schools (Capitol Montessori at Logan, Stuart Hobson Middle School,Jefferson Middle School, Mundo Verde Public Charter School, and HD Cooke Elementary School) greeted us upon arrival and spoke about their gardens. Ultimately, after seeing and learning about all of the well-tended plots, those who came along donated funds and were given the chance to vote to enrich the program at one of the schools. In the end, Jefferson Middle School stood out and the generous contributions collected–which amounted to over 0– will enable the school to build a shed to take care of their tools and give the teachers and volunteers better independence to work on the garden after school hours. We would like to thank Slow Food DC, Chipotle, Whole Foods Market at P St, and all of the school representatives as well as the ride participants. And, we are most grateful to School Garden Specialist, Sam Ullery, of the DC Office of the State Superintendent of Education and community garden and food educator, Ibti Vincent, for all their work to help organize this event.
