My friend Robert Strauss is The Gardener On The Roof. I met him in Barcelona, Spain and had to come to his house to see his highly-productive and creative rooftop garden. In fact, it’s more than a rooftop garden as he has 5 total stories of growing space.
He makes his own compost by getting scraps from the local green grocer, as well as collecting leaves from his neighbors during the fall and winter.
In this video, we go through his entire garden from start to finish to show you exactly how he grows so much food in such a tight urban area.
As a bonus, we harvest and cook calçots a type of spring onion that’s famous in Catalunya with romesco sauce. We pull it straight from his garden, throw it on the grill, get some newspaper from Big Al, and then eat it all together to close out the video.

Hey Kevin. What a pleasure it was to have you at the house and what a GREAT video you produced. Out of the 1,967 views the video has had at this moment, I promise you that my mother-in-law and I are responsible for no more than 1,500 of them. And because "Endow 77" stared at the screen for "three minutes" after seeing my compost, I'm putting together a video on how I do it. Hope to have it up and running in a couple of days. Thanks for everything, Kevin, Jon, and the EG team.
As always my friend Robert amazes!! Good job buddy!
This is fascinating – and Robert is a natural! How great to see his composting method, growing operation and to also fit in a visit to his neighborhood veggie shop and to learn about the calcot tradition. Great video 🙂
you best vlog!
Awsome!! Barcelona is such a nice town and Robert a nice person.
That compost is awesome. I love the way the rooftop is used.
Bravo Robert!! You are an inspiration to all of us in Barcelona trying to promote Urban Farming!! Thanks for all your advice and well done to Kevin for finding him!! Love calcots by the way 🙂 big hug to both of you guys. love. Adela
Awesome!
Amazing! Just started watching the video. Hopefully you cover his containers…. looks like large laundry baskets. ….amazing.
Looks like he plants In bins or rectangular crates on a ledge!
Great video, thank you.
Thanks for sharing – love Roberts garden.
Wow, he used almost every inch of his rooftop!!
When I saw the finished compost vs the just started, I stared at my screen in awe for a good 3 minutes.
Great, I garden on a cement pad hanging over a steep bluff on the PNW, so this was especially interesting to me, of course at the moment we have snow, but gardening will commence soon, LOL. I also grow broad beans all winter, mine are starting to flower now too, but the snow will set them back a little I think, great crop, delicious beans and nitrogen fixing, more Americans should grow them.
