I don't think of it as a money saver, but I like knowing where my food has come from, and how it was grown. I also get a sense of pride in the work and results.
I try to plant some seeds or plants almost every day. I start them mid February. It takes minutes a day. You should see my FOOD FOREST. I do love it. I loved this video! Rhonda
My parents did blanch freezing and we had a large freezer. The fruits of our labor lasted into spring.
I have tomatoes that I bought in pots. I go to farm stands and farmer's markets as well!
I used to have a beautiful Strawberry Garden in the back but then I developed a really severe dangerous allergy to strawberries. So I had to let the garden go and it got taken over by perennial flowers. Now I've replanted all the perennial flowers that I could and redid that Garden as a vegetable garden. I used to love strawberries.
Gardening is work plain and simple. If you're not willing to work in your garden even though you think it's a hobby then it's not worth it. Due to an injury I haven't been in my yard let alone Garden in two years because I was in a wheelchair for 6 months than a walker for 3 months finally came out of the big leg brace and now I'm in a small one. The last two years I've been doing some planters on the table outside with peppers and parsley and such. All my perennial herbs died this past summer cuz we had such a wet hot summer. So I've had to replant those and I just started with peppermint and Sage. I hope to add Thyme and oregano back in once these take. I got a lot of great deals from the dollar store in March. Dollar Tree was selling the 12-count trays of starters for a buck plus bags of soil for a buck plus the seeds were four for a dollar. I made out really good with planting and gardening stuff from Dollar Tree this spring. Since my yard hasn't been touched in 2 years really I finally got a good person and he spent eight hours clearing out everything for me. So now I'm starting over from scratch. We got the back Garden cleared out that was overtaken with Forsythia and uncovered about 4 raspberry bushes. The two raspberry bushes I wanted to add to it we're Dead on Arrival so I'm going to have to complain to the company. I planted grapes and blueberries also. But in the garden this year which didn't take a lot of work I'd say it was at least 3 hours or so of getting the vegetable gardens ready to plant. And I started adding vegetable and herbs in over the course of a month. So now the vegetable garden is full with Japanese eggplant, jalapenos, basil, onions, cucumbers, green peppers, red peppers, cantaloupe, parsley, Sage, and lettuce. I added some beautiful perennials in the front and some beautiful hanging baskets since my yard is now great to look at and enjoy. So I think I spent about $100 on all of this vegetables and fruits and seeds and such this year. I've gotten a lot of lettuce so I've probably eaten about a dozen salads so far and been munching parsley all spring. I'm thinking of starting more seats in the House right now. I tried doing that with lettuce But my cats kept eating the microgreens LOL. Depends on how the summer goes but so far all of the vegetable plants have flowers on them except for the cucumbers and the cantaloupe they were just put in in the last 3 weeks so I'm hoping I get something from them. I might start green beans in the house and put them in the bucket. So every day I probably spend 30 minutes out their watering everything and pulling some weeds.
It may be a hobby for some and that's ok, but here in the Appalachian mountains it is the only way some will have anything to eat. Gardens and canning are a way of life. Seeds are saved and jars through generations. It the difference between in a lot of peoples lives not going hungry .
I'm glad you're exploring both aspects.
When can we see your garden Tawra?
I started gardening this year. Still waiting for most of my produce but I am enjoying it.
