DIY Modern Raised Planter Box // How To Build – Woodworking

I thought this was a fantastic build. I have been wanting to make planter boxes for a raised garden for a long time. Just wasn't able to. We moved into this house 4 years ago this summer of 2019 July. I did not have many tools. I am a retired disabled military vet. We got a good opportunity on this house which has a two story detached "HEATED & INSULATED" 1st floor only second floor is a blank canvas.

First I want to thank you for doing what you are doing. Secondly I want to ping all the JERKS down below stating this is NOT DIY. Yes, it is. I used to get into disagreements like this with my brother "X" brother in law. In regards to the Norm Abram and the New Yankee Workshop. This is what Norm and the guy at Crafted Workshop likes to do and that includes myself.

After moving in I realized I had to have a tool plan. My car is paid off and I have very little in debt student loans and one other thing. This is also a plan. Be debt free.

My computer by design I set up two monitors. This way when I am watching videos like this one or Netflix, Amazon Prime etc. I use the other monitor to find bargains on Craigslist. I also let friends and family know what I am interested in.

In addition to woodworking, metal working, I also participate in Electronics, pneumatic, and hydraulics. Everything with the exception of electronics is self taught. However, I think I have learned more on YOUTUBE University than College Avionics degree combined.

I now have about $60,00 worth of tools in my shop. Sometimes you have to think outside the box. I make a 60" Roll Around tool box out of metal it started with a commercial item that was made of stainless steel and had Commercial grade wheels on it that could hold 1,100 lbs each. It is Not the highest end box but I only have $250 in it.

I was looking for a scissor lift and came across a Dayton forklift electric perfect no fumes in the shop. It worked 100% though it had a bad battery. I got the battery off of
a Semi-tractor & Refer recycle Center. One battery is a Deep Cycle Marine battery and the is a regular Semi battery. Works perfect put some new paint on and couldn't be happier.

The forklift was a whopping $300 bucks and this is not uncommon I have seen it often. What I am trying to say is you can have these things and buy making work stations for specific needs anyone can have a workshop like this. You are pinging someone who has the determination to learn Sketch Up, build his own patio, and retaining wall, planter boxes etc.

Personally I don't know if this is tool envy or what? But it does piss me off. He is doing something and sharing it. If you don't like the video go do something else.

People that I subscribe to and hit the bell. I always put like even before I watch the video will everyone have a great video probably not. However, they took the time to share something and I rather encourage the channel than anything else.

I don't have a metal chop say they do show up on Craigslist. I also bought a brand new Dewalt Mag Drill with bits. $350 it was on Craigslist for 3 hours he was 10 minutes from my house didn't even negotiate.

Similar situation Dewalt horizontal thickness planer barely used. No dust anywhere. $300 buck on Craigslist for an hour. The stated to me 4 phone calls came in while I was on my way over.

You can do this vice complaining what some one else has it is not going to improve your situation. My best purchase a Techtronics 50MHZ Oscilloscope at a garage sale on the same street I used to live on the last day of the sale $5 bucks no leads. I went through it is calibrated perfectly.

This also includes a Radial Arm Saw, Table Saw, Arc Welder, Mig Welder, and Plasma Cutter. I do not have a Mig So the Mig is on my tool to do list which is printed on the wall.

Also 4th of July, Memorial Day, Fathers Day, and Christmas HUGE sale days plan for them.

Good luck and I hope that those complainers complain less and get a plan and produce more and be proud of it. Lastly I will say this having the proper tools gets the job done more quickly and safely (My other half works in the ER and she tells me many stories of people getting hurt so think Safety at all times). It also will get you less fatigued and you finish the project sooner and then that pride feeling kicks in and that is wonderful.

So, get out there and make something and have a tool plan. I don't have a lathe or Mill yet. However I see these resourceful in third world countries with them using leather belts which was everyone used about a 100 years or so ago; and they produce wonderful stuff.

I just checked my metal supplier cost sheet which I found through Craigslist Angle Iron 1.5" x 1.5" x .187" which is 3/16" x 20' $36 bucks change the thickness to .25" which is 1/4" cost is $48 bucks. When I order I try to order a lot of stuff that I normally would need. You find what your common items are in due time. For example I always have about Ten 2 x 4 x 8 and the same with 2 x 6. Birch Cabinet grade plywood, 4 x 8 Hardboard, certain types of nails and screws, and the appropriate rods for the welders.

This can be fun and I am proud of this young man doing something and sharing it.

Today on the to do list rebuild the carburetor to my Stihl FS36 weedeater. That I got from my neighbor when he moved $20 bucks. Weeds do not have a chance with this thing and as I have gotten more into small engine repair on my tool list is an Ultra Sonic Cleaner. At the end of the summer my plan is to clean all the carbs put everything back together and in spring everything is ready to go.

This is my last comment I just mentioned a season. I promised myself this is the last year I am not going to have a Snow Blower. Hello Craigslist and since it is summer I can find bargains. Started looking a week ago. Hopefully I can find one that needs a little carburetor work. I think by having or investing in these tools you end up paying yourself for the rest of your life. I still can't believe I have a forklift for less than a Nice 12" Miter Saw.

    Build Something and be proud….

Nice build but i strongly advise to cut wee triangle of metal and then Weld them inside metal legs where the box end. That way you can rest that wood boxes on it and then screw the legs to box. This few screws attached to box have stress on the wood with that amount of soil on it and with years pass will go loose end those glue not much help. Thanks

  • Cookie Primrose

Hi guys I love DIY but I do not have a woodworking shop. Please think about the amateur without all those lovely tools. Can I duplicate this project with basic tools?

  • goldblend86

Ok i get that you may not have tools for metalwork but essentially he has built a wooden box so if you think that's too much d.i.y. then maybe don't do anything yourself. You'll probably just get hurt ..

  • Zach Lyons

Y'all complain about tools. Save your money and you can have the same. Maybe not name brand but you don't need Festool. Hell go on Craigslist buy used. I suppose this guy should make a video with bum tools to please everyone… Not his problem

  • William Nelson

Next time you make these, check out getting the metal powder coated….seems to weather better than spray paint. Depends on cost I guess, but just a thought.

  • Chris Rae

These are the Videos I hate they make some really pretty but you need a whole workshop to make simple things like this. This is you need a workshop and a lot of money to make something very simple.
