This is a project I’ve been working on on the side for the past 7 months now: trying to turn a closet into a miniature farm that will produce a constant supply of fresh salads everyday 365 days a year. Were your parents supportive of you coming out as a farmer?
Meh.
Not an expert but I've done some "at home farming" in the past. I may be wrong, but coconut husk is fine for sprouts but if you're trying to grow full-sized plants in it, you have to add all the nutrition the plants need since they're not getting everything from the husk.
Coconut coir is nutrients free. Yoi need to feed them.
is the closetfarming still going on? did you improve the yield? I hope you read this, cause i am really interested in this kind of "gardening"
Mix those together with other yummy veggies
For your water system….. try a ceramic water spike with I little pipe through the top. The ceramic cone goes in the plant pot and the hose goes to a reservoir on a lower level. It works through capillary and action and draws water from the reservoir into the cone which than seeps water into the soil to retain a constant moisture consistency. As your plants draw water it gets automatically replaced.
The hose is about the same size as an aquarium air hose so you could have 5-10 plants drawing from a single container holding 1-10 gallons…. just check your jug once a week or every other week.
These water spikes cost 20.00 at big box stores but on Ebay I find them for .50-2.00 …..
Some times in a 2 pack.
So, I have four words for that will flip your costs on your head ……self watering grow tower.
Foot print= 2ft x 2ft.
12 bins= 24 grow spaces =12.00+tax
Hardware cloth=15.00
Pvc pipe(1 in or smaller) =4.00
Total cost……. 31.00
Enough to fill your room and quadruple your grow capacity =124.00
Optional upgrade…..
Mylar wall coverings (Recommended for icreasing light availability to the plants….lots is being obsorbed by walls when it could be reflected back to your plants.)
12volt grow light led strip on each pot(2.00 on ebay… give or take). Rechargable battery powered (solar chargers also on ebay….10.00)
Go to the local dollar store and buy 12 of their stackable hardplastic organizing storage bins.(you want these rectangular and to access.)
Go to homedepot and ask for hardware cloth and a length of pvc pipe
Track down some cardboard or political signs.
Cut the cloth(its wire mesh) to fit in each bin about 1-2 inches from the bottom with a place to insert the pipe for filling the reservoir.
Cut the pipe for each bin so it reaches the bottom but at an angle for easy water flow and its top at the surface of your soil.
Line with cardboard and be sure it has a wick section all the way to the bottom of the reservoir (can punch a scrap of towel through)
Fill with plant medium. Stack and plant. Fill reservoirs.every plant gets lots of light.

My mom use to grow plants in the closet as well, but they weren’t the kind you eat.
WOW! This is so inspired! I envy your engineer-like thinking in everything you do. I wish one could learn to think that way! I want to open my under-the-stairs space that I want to convert into a space-age looking indoor garden. Anyone have any thoughts on how to accomplish that?

an idea instead of the white lights use the new red and blue grown lights. May get a worm bin going too for the waste and use it for tea to give back to your plants. cant think of anymore at this time. Oh i would out the lights at either the back or in the sides this way all plants get light. you can box in the bottom 5 sides for your mushrooms so it remains dark and still lets the transfer of gas. good idea though. try to get some organic seeds to grow and keep them pure. and you can also do a float system where they plants take up their own water, you just keep it filled.
I would consider a mixture of vermiculite, perlite, coconut husk and maybe some soil. I've found coconut husks tend to get moss in moist environments.
Andy, did you ever consider doing a vermicompost set up in your apartment to serve as your source of fertilizer? It would also allow as a way to get rid of the organic scraps left over from the cooking/growing process.

You can counter act the kidney stone effect by eating carciferous veggies like cauliflower and broccoli
