The cherry is a tree belonging to the “Rosaceae” family and very widespread all over the world, especially in America and Europe. There are really many varieties of cherry, but despite this the wood obtained from it always has the same characteristics for good or bad. Cherry wood differs, first of all, according to its origin. There is the American one, characterized by a darker color and therefore called “Black Cherry”. It is a little lighter than the others, resistant and more available. It is widely used for flooring. European cherry wood, on the other hand, is heavier and has higher costs. It is clearer and more valuable. Objects made of cherry wood are not particularly demanding in terms of maintenance. In fact, they only need regular cleaning, using a slightly damp microfibre cloth.

There are several characteristics of cherry wood and which contribute considerably to making it the highly sought-after material it is today. First of all, it is perfectly resistant to compression, bending, twisting and traction. It also has a good hardness, in the sense that it does not scratch very easily. Its durability is modest. This means that it is not particularly suitable for outdoor environments because, if not properly treated, it could be ruined by insects or bad weather. Furthermore, cherry wood does not absorb humidity because it has a very low porosity and is easy to work with. The specific weight of cherry wood is about 600 kg / m3 when dry, while it rises to about 800 kg / m3 when fresh. Good aptitude for finishes (especially with bee’s) and assembly, always easy and very effective.

The uses for which cherry wood is used with great success are truly many. The furniture is certainly the master. Works to make beds, doors and the most varied furnishing accessories are not rare. Generally in great demand everything that can be included in the interior carpentry. The furniture, however, is very rarely exclusively made of cherry wood. Given the not really affordable cost, only the finishing touches are made. Especially with American cherry wood, toys, musical instruments and floors are made. The slats for the barrels are also normally made of cherry wood. The residues can be used as firewood. The combustion, in fact, is excellent. Equally the amount of heat produced.

Just as it normally happens for all types of wood, also for cherry wood the price is established exclusively in cubic meters. In doing so, several factors are taken into account such as the origin of the wood being evaluated, the types, the category chosen. The latter, in fact, provides a scale from 1 to 4, based on the quality and value of the wood. Finally, the degrees of finish are considered, going to see if they are raw or semi-finished woods. Indicatively, however, it can be said that cherry wood (taking into consideration only the first 2 classes) subjected to artificial drying is between 1,000 and 1,500 euros per cubic meter. It is on this basis that the retail prices of the individual pieces are then established, without forgetting to consider the quality of the raw material.
