Also known as cucuzza, calabash, opo squash, bottle squash, long opo, long upo, Po gua, Pul Qua, and long melon (Chinese melon), yugao, and in India as lauki, dudhi, doodhi, aal or ghiya, Bhim. These plants are very hardy and can grow to 3 feet long!
This long bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria) is an annual, vigorous, climbing vine with large leaves and white flowers. They are very hardy vines. It had been cultivated in Asia, Europe and the Americas for thousands of years.
Since these vines are known to grow more than 15′ high, I was advised to build a strong trellis for support. This is just one way, there are other ways to support the vines.
I started the seedling on the first week of May. About a couple months later I harvested 2 long bottle gourd, 3 and 4 feet long.
I still have seeds. If you could, PM me with your address, and I’ll send them to you. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!

Thank you so much for the detailed video. I have following question. 1) how much Sun does opo needs. 2) where can i buy cow manure in US 3) which part of the world you live
Excellent. Did you know that you can eat the leaves too. Cook like spinach. Also even the skin of the bottle guard is edible. Very delicious indeed.
I love the commit Paige did. I agree it's good to see videos like this, for me this was enjoying and educational. I would love to see many more like this one on youtube!
Also could you kindly elaborate into the last part of the video on the side plant clipping thing?
Thank you in advance x

Hi, I love your video. I've been looking through the comments trying to see where to buy the seeds from, I want to try growing these next year.
Wow amazing
Hi, I have some questions on gourds.
1. When is the right time to harvest the gourds? Some say when the stem turns brown, is that true?
2. Do you cook the gourds with seeds and pulp? or have you tried to cook gourds with seed and pulp? if yes, was it different in taste than without seed and pulp?
Thanks.
I loved this video. So comprehensive! Thanks. It gave me the idea that I needed for our beds!
Great Video Marlene – I enjoyed it very much! This is my first year attempting to grow a vegetable garden and I purchased what I thought were baby Zucchini Squash plants, but it turned out to be these Cucuzza Squash. They are actually doing well.
I look forward to any additional videos you may share.
– Thank you
how to grow this plant from seeds?
OMG!! Amazing! I tried growing bottle gourd last year – and I had just a few small gourds between 4-5 plants (not a success from what I’ve heard). I’d love to try again this year. Would you be able to send me some seeds please – I can mail you a prepaid envelope. Your plants / gourds look amazing!! Congrats.
