The Thurs., Oct. 6 Biophilia: Pittsburgh meeting featured Lisa Story, who led a discussion on “Therapeutic Benefits of Horticulture.” Effective use of the natural world for psychological health depends upon the connection between people and plants. This talk focuses on how seeing the garden through the eyes of those with different abilities and different struggles is at the forefront of learning and cultivating horticultural therapy.
Lisa Story, a resident of Moon Township, Pa., is the founder and executive director of Hope Grows, a non-profit organization dedicated to “caring for the caregiver.” As a licensed counselor and certified thanatologist, Lisa’s professional experience with the connection of grief and bereavement to the natural world has led her to the path of the nonprofit. Lisa has written programs using gardening and nature as a way to understand grief and the elements of self-care. She has been an invited speaker on the topics of horticulture and psychology, and her ongoing project is creating a sustaining environment at the future location of the Hope House. She believes that mindfulness, having a positive outlook, and connecting to nature are therapeutic.
