Roofing technology needs to be improved. Once you put a nail in the water barrier it is no longer water proof. It will leak eventually when the nail rusts out.

The second valley is wrong when using a laminated shingle. Even if you tab the shingle at the top where it is laminated there will always be a point on shingle where it can catch water. I have seen it trail across the lamination strip, rot the nails and causes leaks. The whole purpose of tabbing a shingle is so that water doesn't catch the point. So when you are using a laminated shingles always install a inverted bleeder like the open valley system.

All you cause is dams for water when you put tar in valley. If you start in valley you have to go to top of valley or it will eventually cause more leaks

1/8th of an inch per foot is not a realistic number as far as trimming the valley back is concerned, Let's say you have a valley that is 24 feet long. That means, at the top of the valley the cut shingle lays dead center of the valley, then at bottom of the valley it's 3 inches outside the valley center line, which exceeds the recommended 2 inches maximum by an entire inch, not to mention looks quite silly. If the valley is any longer(they can be a LOT longer), then by the end if it you'll be a whole foot outside the center line which is no bueno. Same goes for gutters. 1/8th of an inch per foot is a nice "sounding" number, but if your gutter is any longer than 20 feet or so, you'll end up having the low end so low that the water dumps right over it, missing it completely.

why does everyone start from the inside with the valleys? why not start from the outside where they are supposed to? i have never started from the inside it takes to much time having to snap lines and everything. start from the outside and work your way up with books and everything comes out fine

Started the valley wrong when you started laying the shingles. I never used a ounce of black tar in the valleys in my 20 some years of roofing. Before Ice shield came out we used 90# down the valley then the metal over it. Ice shield is some awesome stuff.

I agree Johnny the valley should have the 1st shingle on the other side installed first. Very good point you made. I have seen it done wrong plenty of times.

I have certainly really like experiencing your own video concerning Roofing. I just recently started out in roofing and discovered your company's remarks to be very very helpful. I look forward to observing more of your company's video clips. Can I ask how long you have been in this type of industry?

Close cut valley should have the the first shingle on the other side installed first. Oh and be sure to DRIVE your hookblade though the shingle and penetrate the shingle below.

Your video shows a continuous step pattern which is not what GAF states on installation. I'm not going to argue with you – your just wrong – proof is GAF.com If you install these shingles the way it is in this video in the state of Florida – you will FAIL inspection, which may result in no home owners insurance
    . Change your video !!!

Notice on 3:55 seconds into film and see the bottom edge by gutter at gutter splash guard there is no shingle coverage. Only starter course where all the water drains to is not a good idea. Also why is he installing the GAF shingle at a same distance continuous step pattern. GAF installation shows not to keep the same step pattern.1st shingle is a full shingle, 2nd coarse has a 6" cut off, 3rd coarse has 11" cut off, and the 4th has a 17" cut off.

Closed Cut valley Demo at start of shingle installation is wrong!!! look at the first (Gutter edge) shingle behind the gutter splash guard.. If you look close there is a gap between shingles. The proper way to do a closed cut valley is; The first shingle is always installed from the opposite side of your pressed side. 35 years experienced installer.
