I wanted to share a video progress report of an Aquaponics Vertical Grow Tower that I’m working on which is made with nearly all re-purposed material.
This is just a progress video. My goal with this project is that I wanted to create a FREE or VERY CHEAP Vertical Grow Tower that could be built by anybody with things that they have laying around the house with very few tools. It needs to me aesthetically pleasing to the eye without loosing any function. I think I’m going to achieve this.
I still need to figure out what kind of grow media to use, how to keep the light out (I already have some good ideas for this), and need to get a larger pump. I’m open to any and all suggestions! 🙂
I will start by making this a hydroponic system so I can test my proof-of-concept but once it’s up and running, we may add some fish and try it out as an aquaponic system.

Really digging your videos Wayne, learning a lot from them. I'm gonna be building my worm farm bins using your video tutorial and also gonna be giving these aquaponic towers a go I've got 2 or 3 large garbage bags full of plastic bottles that need repurposing/recycling.
Also wanted to advise you melting the holes to the desire size using a heated metal can or similar, much easier than drilling with a hole saw.

I love it. Lol. I'm having some good success with a horizontal type system but I am rather new to this. So I'm wondering is this like a mist spray I'm curious on how often you feed water to the tower. Is there so many times a day? I love it. Lol. +Wayne Meador have You heard of a air lift pump ? Its a fish tank air pump and air stone in the tank/tote useing a inverted funnel over the air stone as air rises in the tank it carries some water up the tube inbetween each air bubble
This might shove Your problem with limited head height problems with a cheap water pump as head height increases the GPH/GPM decreases rapidly
Somebody mentioned algee growth in the clear or tinted bottles how about spraying the bottle with a outdoor paint like a rustolem type
Anothef idea is to make Your stand legs the size of the tote in the shape of a box to fit the tote that way You could put a grow tower on each corner
Since You have 14 bottles on one corner of the tote You could get 56 bottle in relative the same space 14 x 4 corners

I really like this idea. Can't wait for "Part 3."
On using the clay pellets they get heavy. I think Ann's ( Gideon's Garden) on using Perlite is the better way to go. There are different sizes of Perlite available so fine tuning it for the Your Bottles can be done to adjust the holding time for the water. Finer to hold longer between cycles or bigger for less water holding and more air. The design is good I suggest also that You amp it up and use bigger containers for Your next build. Using existing products repurposing them is a wonderful way to go and helps relieve our landfills Way to Go!

Nice job Wayne.It really looks good. As for media,I have begun looking into charcoal( natural wood kind)or biochar.It is very light weight and affordable vs the clay Pellet price. As for the pump I was going to suggest one of those small waterfall pumps that come with a filter box. (however that's before I knew you were going to run it as a hydroponic and not aquaponics system). Maybe over sizing the pump would be a good idea in case you want to run some more stuff of it as you continue to expand. Keep up the good work bud.

Very well done. Agreed with others on using the clay media. I have used every kind of stone because I couln't afford the expanded clay, but if you cant afford it, then I would use Lava rock on the bottom of each bottle because it is lighter and then creek pebbles or other none limestone base rocks to finish it. That what I used in my grow tower until I purchased the expanded clay.. Thanks so much for the update!!

I would go with the clay as they are lighter than other media.. Might want to consider a covering on the bottles so algae doesn't take hold & start using up the valuable nutrients.. Most definitely a magnetic drive pump would be the way to go.. I personally would go with a tote twice the size so room won't be an issue later on down the track if you think you need to add more fish../

Hi Wayne, very nice design! Looking forward to seeing it in action. Personally I would use perlite instead of the expanded clay pellets. Less weight and less expensive.
You may get a wee bit more hight by narrowing the supply line from pump to the top of the pole bro but it looks like 2 metres you have to deal with so a larger capacity pump will get you there 🙂 enjoyed the look bro :)
