The key to 5 gallon containers is not over planting them and making sure you keep them fed and watered. Container soil with 50% organic matter really helps with moisture. Here are mature vegetable plants of Kale, Peas, Chard, Lettuces and a growing determinate tomato. It will give you a good idea of what can grow in 5 gallon containers.

Hi Gary, I enjoy your videos. When do you start your indoor seed starters? Do you start — say one month before last frost? Do you have a grow light? Do you put 2-3 seeds in each little hole as insurance in case one seed doesnlt germinate? After those get a little big, do you then transfer them to styrofoam cups and then when thosefinally get large enough, do you move them to their final home – the 5 gallon pot? Thank you once again.

Thank you very much this has been very helpful to me as I am from Malaysia and container garden. How long will an indeterminate tomato plant last in a container with a hot season throughout the year I was just wondering?

Another great video..I do exclusively container growing including Swiss Chard as yourself.. Most folks who see my garden are first drawn to the Chard, because they are really beautiful colourful plants, but they have no idea what it is….. I grow Bright Lights and Ruby Red varieties.. I picked up plastic 1/2 whiskey barrels at Lowes and use these… I also use these barrels to grow the smaller leaf variety Georgia collard greens and have had great success.. You are definitely spot on regarding keeping up with fertilization..

Thank you for the chard recommendation. I nearly followed another guide where it advised to plant 9-12!!! I don't know if the author was talking about dawrf plants as it wasn't spelled out clearly. Thank you for saving me. lol

If you do use indeterminate tomatoes, prune to a single stem.

Looking to plant collards today in a 5 gallon bucket, wondering how many are needed to pick some leaves and make a side dish for two people?

What is the rainfall in your growing area right now?  This week and last week we had several inches of rain pouring down.  March I planted several varieties of Rustic Garden determinate and indeterminate plants, two in ten gallon and one in five gallon containers. Worried that the rain will pull off the blossoms.   Will the excessive rain cause problems growing tomatoes in containers?  Best soil for containers is Fox Farm Ocean Forest about $18 per 1.5 cu.ft. bag.  It has composted forest humus, sphagnum peat for aeration, bat guano, fish, crab, shrimp, Norwegian kelp meals and earthworm castings. Last year, I made the container mix and discovered it was more expensive and more labor consuming to purchase, measure and mix six to eight soil additives in a large enough quantity to fill twenty containers.  Fair warning some soils listed on the label as organic as not appropriate for vegetables grown in containers, because they are contain too many sticks and wood chips.  I purchased some MG organic soil to transplant seedlings from greenhouse trays to pots, but I will not use this soil when I place the vegetables in the containers, it is too woody.

Wow…impressive garden again!  I had so many extra seedlings this year (thanks to your video instruction) that i just had to put them in pots.  I probably over-planted but i have to say, they make a nice ornamental display even if I don't eat them or they crowd each other out.
