Most experts agree that children ages 6-17 need at least one hour of moderate-to-vigorous intensity exercise everyday. Children and youth who meet this recommendation have been linked to higher levels of fitness, lower body fat, stronger bones and muscles, improved cognition, and reduced symptoms of depression. Typically this requirement is met at school (P.E. and recess), with extra curricular activities, or organized sports after school.
But what about the summer months when the kids are home more often? Or extended breaks from school? Or worse – what if there’s a viral pandemic crippling the country and schools are all on shutdown and all sporting and other recreational events are indefinitely suspended? (I’m looking at you, Corona Virus of 2020)
Well – that’s where this video comes in. As a doctor of physical therapy I understand how important activity is in children. As a father of four (who now has to try to figure out how to homeschool 4 children) I know it’s important for all our sanity that the kids get out an move a little bit!
So that’s why in this video I want to share with you 11 great ideas that you and your children can do to stay healthy, strong, and active at home.
This list is by no means meant to be all-inclusive; these are simply some ideas that work well in my family.
