We have been asked why we plant so many radishes in the garden which is an excellent question and bears some explanation. The answer really is simple. Kids. While radish is good in many different dishes – especially salads and on sandwiches, they don’t seem to lend themselves well to most cooking. The main uses for radish is fresh rather than cooked. There are some recipes that use radishes in cooking, but really they are few and far between. If you find a good cooked radish recipe, please feel free to post it in the comments! When you have kids that like to garden, especially young children who may be just starting to learn how to grow plants and vegetables, the easy to grow, fast growing radish is just the vegetable to get them started. The root of the radish grows quickly into a bright treat for the kids. The may not have the patience to wait two or more months for other vegetables to grow and mature, but a radish can be less that one month from sowing seed to harvest. The kids get a chance to eat the zesty treat quickly after planting which is important for young ones with short attention spans. They may lose interest if they have to wait 2, 3 or more months for a plant to mature. It is exciting for youngsters to be able to grow garden vegetables so quickly. A natural progression from simple things like a root vegetable is growing a huge winter squash like a Banana squash, Hubbard squash or Pumpkin. Things like this keep gardening exciting for little ones and make an adventure out of gardening 🙂

Radishes were the first plants my dad let me try in my own corner of his garden. I only grow flowers now but I enjoy having flowers no one else has. I even have a milkweed garden to help out the Monarch Butterflies.

Radishes are great to grow for kids. When we were kids, my grandparents let us plant what we wanted to grow. My brother picked radishes and I picked carrots, needless to sya, his radishes were ready to pick way before my carrots. However, I did okay, I now have a garden and my brother, I'm still trying to talk him into a garden. LOL. I planted a pumpkin and put it in a cup for my grandson, needless to say when he got ready to go home, the pumpkin was the first thing he put in the car. He's five and I think he's wanting to grow a big jack-o-lantern, I just hope I didn't give him a small cooking pumpkin variety. God Bless and take care.

That's exactly how children think; 30 days is a l-o-n-g time. I planted a daff bulb in a pot when I was 8. A week later and I was asking mum why it hadn't flowered yet!  That nice bunch of radishes is about $3 worth in our supermarkets, but they wouldn't taste like yours!

Because radishes can be ready in one month, kids can do several plantings in one summer. Same with beans. And that can be fun for kids, and adults, too. Even up here in the north where people can only expect to grow things over about a 4 month period, from late May to early September, that would make at least 3 plantings of radishes and I guess at least 2 plantings of green beans. :-)

Sky guy did buy them from the garden. The currency was labor.
I didn't consider that speedy though not immediate gratification would be important for instilling a love for gardening in kids.
Did you get that link I messaged you for the FLOW hive video? If you don't click on links, just search YouTube for Flow Hive. Really a neat idea, though I have read arguments against also.
P.S. I see that your troll is still active. Doesn't he have something better to do… running barefoot through nettles perhaps?

You guys are pulling radish and I barely have peas planted.  Calling for snow flurries tonight, dang Canadian weather.  Oh well good time to get the spring jobs looked after before the garden goes in.  Cheers!!

Have always had a fondness for red round radishes. First recollection was adding touches of salt to a "bulb" and eating it down like a apple at a Thanksgiving gathering.

Great looking radishes… Someone needs to come up with a recipe besides salad and garnish for them. Any cooks in the subscribers pool that has a recipe that uses radishes?

It is so true when you are very young time seems to go by very slowly. Then the older you get time goes by much quicker. Skyguy must be very proud to be growing food for the family I know I was when I was his age and am still proud to grow my own veg.
