    The method you are using is what I have been using for many years now, and
    it never fails to make a good root system on my tomato plants. A good root
    system is the first step towards a healthy, productive plant. A good root
    system will better stand up to periods of drought and other problems, and
    also usually give the best crop of tomatoes possible. I grow some in 5
    gallon buckets every year because I enjoy growing things in containers.
    Hope your plant does well once it warms up there.

    Peat pots are horrible if planted in the garden. I’ve learned that the hard
    way. I like your paper pot, that is nifty and will decompose to nothing.
    That tomato plant will make roots fast in that bucket, especially if you
    have dark colored bucket. Tomato plant roots like it hot- makes for great
    tomatos!
