The Plant Song
Video Rating: / 5
Homesteading is all about trying new things and learning from the process. We did an experiment in how to plant potatoes in the winter for a spring harvest to see if it would work. The experiment is now complete! We harvested our potato crop. Well, half of the winter planted potatoes anyway. We will dig the other half in a week or so and the spring plants when they die back as is the normal time to dig potatoes. There were quite a few potatoes in the one row we dug. If there were more potatoes to plant, we would love to be able to use the Massey Ferguson Tractor to dig them. There is a 3 point digger attachment for the tractor, but we do not have one. After all is said and done, we harvested about 50lbs of potatoes from one row so we will catt the experiment a success. After a successful harvest, we will rototill the row, planting the same row back with more potatoes for one more crop this year. A fall crop. That makes this doubly successful – being able to plant an early and a late crop of spuds. The garden is slowly coming together. Gardening is a lot of work when it is being broken out of native ground! The soil is good, but not overly fertile so the yield was a bit on the low side I would say.
Now we have plenty of potatoes for food and we will be looking up lots of new healthy recipes on the food network and elsewhere to see if we can find new recipes to cook.

Good job kids!
With all them cows around your place you have about the best fertilizer you can find, throw it into a compost pile and a few months later… free fertilizer.
Looks really good. That's a bucket of potatoes that you didn't have before. The kids really do love that pool. :)
GREAT VIDEO. THUMBS UP N FACE BOOK SHARED.
Pooh gunna be some good potato salad! Yummy nothing better on a summer BBQ then a side of potatoe salade……
Oh I love my potatoes. I love them baked for a roast and I love making chips out of them.
At first, I wondered why you took the shovel for a harvest.
Then I remembered that potatoes don't grow on the branches of a potato tree.
Fresh tators in June is treat for sure
does your local ag extension service offer soil analysis?
A big thumbs up to the potato harvest, and also a big thumbs up to jumping in the pool!
That many potatoes would last me quite awhile. Great result. I would be very happy with that.
Definitely a success. Well done :-)
It looks like your winter planted potatoes was a definite success. You have a big family so they might just last untill your Spring crop is ready. Then to top it off the kids are off to the pool. Well done and a big thumbs up.

The irony is that I'm here soon after this video is up. At least I'm not screaming FIRST like most other YouTube commenters that want attention.
