Saved some of the tips of the sweet potatoes I’d already harvested back the end of August and put in some water to root knowing I might use them again. I wanted to test whether these slips would be viable after flowering to test the possibility of continuous growing of sweets all year long. I demonstrate how I planted up 4 containers which will hopefully get placed in my upcoming heated greenhouse I’m working on now. There is also a follow up on cut-and-come-again at the end.

A little about my setup. I have a hydroponic greenhouse. I grow in a system I call FAWN which is a modified hydroponic drip system. The media I grow in is aged rice hulls with parboiled rice hulls mixed. This has proven to be a great mix for me. I use Masterblend fertilizer as my nutrients to every plant grown. I’ve been pretty successful with my setup growing hydroponic tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, squash, cucumbers, cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, turnip greens, corn, potatoes, kale, carrots, beets, spinach, onions, leeks, and even okra! Everything a gardener would desire. I also dabble in other areas like growing in raised beds, growing in a ground garden, grafting, pond activities, growing fruits, and other projects on the homestead.

In my squash breeding program, I saw where the SVB was killing off many of my squash. This particular squash’s seed squash was no where near ready. I wanted a backup in case the SVB got the plant which it eventually did! This squash plant was special because it tested much higher in brix than it’s siblings and sweetness is an indicator of quality. Oh, and it tasted fantastic too. So, I researched online and everything I read said it can’t be done unless you rood the vine attached to the plant first. This isn’t an option for me the way I grow them so I gave it a shot. It is looking good so far.
