Saved some of the tips of the sweet potatoes I’d already harvested back the end of August and put in some water to root knowing I might use them again. I wanted to test whether these slips would be viable after flowering to test the possibility of continuous growing of sweets all year long. I demonstrate how I planted up 4 containers which will hopefully get placed in my upcoming heated greenhouse I’m working on now. There is also a follow up on cut-and-come-again at the end.

A little about my setup. I have a hydroponic greenhouse. I grow in a system I call FAWN which is a modified hydroponic drip system. The media I grow in is aged rice hulls with parboiled rice hulls mixed. This has proven to be a great mix for me. I use Masterblend fertilizer as my nutrients to every plant grown. I’ve been pretty successful with my setup growing hydroponic tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, squash, cucumbers, cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, turnip greens, corn, potatoes, kale, carrots, beets, spinach, onions, leeks, and even okra! Everything a gardener would desire. I also dabble in other areas like growing in raised beds, growing in a ground garden, grafting, pond activities, growing fruits, and other projects on the homestead.

In my squash breeding program, I saw where the SVB was killing off many of my squash. This particular squash’s seed squash was no where near ready. I wanted a backup in case the SVB got the plant which it eventually did! This squash plant was special because it tested much higher in brix than it’s siblings and sweetness is an indicator of quality. Oh, and it tasted fantastic too. So, I researched online and everything I read said it can’t be done unless you rood the vine attached to the plant first. This isn’t an option for me the way I grow them so I gave it a shot. It is looking good so far.

Hi Brent , So can you just clarify for me one thing …….did you cut the vine offshoot off or did you layer it ? I need to know as my husband has just broken off completely a stem of my precious squash plant !! . I really want to save it ! š

Great to know. I had a plant I just got rid of. I might could have saved a root. I'll keep this in mind for next time.
Just picked this little tidbit up on bug control from my aquaponics group. Might help you. http://nxthorizon.com/Insights_2/Entries/2016/7/9_They_Die_Happy__Ethanol_a_Potential_new_IPM_Tool.html

I liked the intro. Good info on the squash.
Great timing on this video Bent, I have a few squash vines feeling the pinch of the SVB as well. Who knew you could save the plant in that manner! Good to know. Thanks
Oh yeah, You can root about any vining plant! Like you putting the outtakes at the beginning! My whole video is an outtake ; )
Who knew.
Hi Brent,
So will you need to water more often if you stick with the par-boiled rice hulls? Or will you just top the buckets with aged rice hulls like this one. Cheers,
Bill
