    Another excellent vlog as always.

My two problems with this series are: 1) I don't like Wirt, and 2) not much rewatch value imo. I really do like it, though.

Wirt and Greg are stepbrothers, they mentioned it in the tavern episode.

Theres one episode where they say that they only have the same mother!

I'm almost 100% sure its supposed to be purgatory. Why else would they have highlighted that part where they roll down the Cliffside into the lake so much? why else would they wake up being pulled out of the water and rushed to the hospital? And why else would they wind up in this strange woodlands setting that looks like its from the Victorian era, with all sorts of strange and differnt people and random buildings that are just there? It wasnt reality, it was purgatory. Everyone in the woods died at some point and are still going about their lives as if they dont know, just like wort and Gregg in the first episode didnt know how they got there, the beast most likely represents death and the trees are obviously childern he claimed that it was too late for. Wort and gregg almost died… its really even darker when you think about it like that.

I feel like it was a bit of a love letter to a lot of fiction. The sort of purgatory story like Pottsfeild and the whole Dante's Inferno, and lots of classic animation, like the betty boop in the tavern scene, and the dream sequence!

I kind of disagree with how they did not like the 90's episode, I felt like it sort of explained Wirt and Gregs characters, and kind of brought this second element to it. Everything in their world slowly getting colder as the series goes, as they lay in a lake on halloween night, and how when the brothers are separated there are huge tone shifts, things being more fantastical with Greg and more down to earth with Wirt.

I think the Woodsmen came to terms with his own fears and he was able to leave the unknown and be reunited with his Daughter in his own time since The Unknown seems to take place in many different time periods at once.

I think that it was very similar to the book "the book of lost things" except the fairy tails in that book were classic Grimm ones retold and this one was more like as you said, American tales retold without actually using any. In the book of lost things, there is a crooked man similar to the beast as well. a woodsman that carries an axe, anthropomorphic animals (though in the book it is completely creepy). the biggest difference I find is that this seems to completely hint that it is a real place that anyone might find themselves in, which honestly increases its amazingness for me. I grew up watching way old cartoons too, so I had dreams and nightmares very similar to the settings in this, so it seemed old and new at the same time. It, like adventure time, brings out many emotions, but it doesn't have the slapstick crazy humor, it is more fear, faith, hope, dread, and many others, but none super overpowering to drown out the others. No extreme happiness or extreme sad. even when celebrating or anything, there is still a sense that they might have done the wrong thing. Even when saved, they are still unsure what to do or how to feel about their circumstances.

I have a clarifying question if anyone can answer: So, as we find out at the end of OtGW, the Beast was tricking the woodsman into keeping the lantern lit because it's actually his soul in there, not the woodsman's daughter's soul. We also assume that the Beast has been tricking people into keeping the lantern lit for a while with the whole "loved one's soul" thing, since he tried to trick Wirt into doing it with Greg's soul supposedly in the lantern. It's also pretty clear that the Beast has to trick people like this because he can't keep the lantern lit himself, likely because he can't be exposed to light (we often see him in the shadows and trying to keep away from any light). But, of all of this is true, then why did the Beast try to take the lantern himself multiple times? That contradicts everything else we learn about him. If someone knows, I'd like to hear why, because it's the only thing that really bugs me about this fantastic miniseries. Thanks.

They mention in the episode where Wirt and Greg get directions in the tavern that Wirt and Greg are step-brothers.

They fall into a river, and are taken to an in-between of life and death. The deal is, if you lose hope, the beast gets you and you die. After Beatrice betrays them, Wirt starts to lose hope, and vines start to grow around him. But Greg goes up to "Heaven" and makes a deal with the fairy to trade Wirt's soul for his own, giving himself to the beast. But Wirt saves him, they defeat the Beast, and both live.

imo this series doesn't have a lot of rewatch value. You watch it twice and you're good.

I remember seeing this and saying "Looks like a Gravity Falls rip off" so I refused to watch it until I heard good things about it. So when they played it again on Halloween I watched and I loved it. It's a great show.
