Growing plants hydroponically certainly has its benefits. Crops tend to have less pest problems and have lower maintenance since there is no weeding or watering. Traditional hydroponic set ups are complicated, take up a lot of space, use many expensive specialty parts, take many hours to construct and are usually very expensive. Micro Hydroponics is none of that! Its simple to put together, easy to maintain, inexpensive and its very space efficient! Its even Off grid!
This method was adapted from the Kratky method of growing hydroponics in a static nutrient solution. Using the glass wide mouth quart canning jars with 3″ net post and rockwool cubes has come from my experimenting and is what differs my method from his.

I have been using the smaller net cups for lettuce but I wanted to use a 3" cup for kohlrabi. I was waiting for you to drop that three inch cup into that mason jar and when it fit I thought "yeah, that's it!!" Thanks
I love your set up! I've been growing lettuce like this in my college dorm room for a while now, but I've been just sort of hacking together systems with odds and ends from the recycle bins. I'm definitely thinking of going with this in the future!
Also, I think these jars could make great gifts since they take so little upkeep.
This is great, and you're a great teacher! subbed, can't wait to watch more of your videos :)!
do you have a list of materials that I would need to make this?
Found this fertilizer – http://www.amazon.com/Lettuce-Formula-Soluble-Hydroponics-Friendly/dp/B00VF3VT4C/ref=sr_1_1?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1460860239&sr=1-1&keywords=Hydroponic+Lettuce+Fertilizer+8-15-36
Awesome idea … I have plenty of mason jars and this is a very cost effective way to grow lettuce indoors. Thank you for posting this video!
could I do this system with fresh herbs?
Is the nutrient solution organic?
Hi, thanks for taking your time to show us the hydro method, awesome. You had said 1/4 tsp of solution per quart jar, correct? Is that a 1/4 tsp of A and B? Or a combination of A & B at 1/4 tsp? Sorry for being stupid here, but I ordered on Amazon the items you suggested and it came in two bags one marked A the other B it said to mix by the 5 gallon bucket method. I re-watched your video and if I understand correctly I can use a 1/4 tsp of the solution per quart of water.
just found your site. this is exactly what I have been looking for. thank you so much for the great – and easy – info. I paused the vid and went to amazon to order everything I need to get started.
its nearly impossible to grow hydro with organic ferts like fish etc. they need specialized hydro ferts :} we use kratky for basil it works easy as lettuce
Hey that's cool using a quart jar for it. I've done it in a plastic milk jug (covered in foil), but now I use storage totes to make better use of the space. Always nice to see someone using the Kratky method successfully.
I use those protein containers with a 2" net cup, they are about 3/4 gallon, can usually go almost a month before having to add water, and I got 10 heads in a 27 gallon tote that I probably won't have to ever add water. I don't harvest the whole heads of lettuce I cut them back and let them grow back.
this was the BEST! you have covered all the bases and i thank you for your research and for sharing :)
Thanks for the great video! Could you please do an update on the lettuce and how they are doing? Are there other vegetables that can grow hydroponically? Also, the green paper covered canning jars looked like they were small mouthed canning jars, what size net pots were used and would it be better?
I'd like to know, what can't you grow with this method?
great vid, very helpful
I just shared your video, I find it good and it shows that you can grow in a smaller size than me. I am trying to spread the magic of hydroponics so thanks for the video :D
Love it!! Thanks for the info. You are super cute and can explain things perfectly. I am going to try it.
