Join me and the kids as we harvest, for the first time, sunflower seeds!

What is the attraction with feeding animals? What we don’t want to feed is goats in the garden! While we were on our road trip to pick up the pigs in De Kalb, Texas, our goats decided it would be a good time to sneak through the fence and gorge themselves on the new corn, sweet potatoes and strip the bark from the peach and Apricot trees. This effectively killed the Peach trees since they cannot live without the cambium layer.
On the flip side, the kids really are enjoying feeding the pigs. I don’t know why it is that people so much enjoy feeding animals. Why it is so satisfying to watch animals eat 🙂 But it is. We enjoy feeding the animals and watching them eat! 🙂 But then, that is part of homesteading!

Not sure if this has been asked….how do you keep the birds from eating the seeds!? Half of my seeds are gone from the birds!?
We are growing a bunch this year.
Good video !?
VERY unexpected, and VERY COOL to see the PETER SCHIFF plug at the end.?
best place to buy sunflower seeds cheap??
Your a great mom!?
And one more thing, you are actually asking if sunflowers are a perennial ( dies and comes back the next year from the root system).
This is a very smart question because I wondered the same thing when I first started gardening!
I'll make this easy for you to learn, just categorize your plants into 2 classes —
those which re- seed to regrow (produces a flower which spreads new seed)
and
those which regrow from the root system the next year.
Sunflowers drop their seed and regrow!
Hi!
Such fun to plant sunflowers for the kids! I would wait until spring. They might do ok this fall in 7B, but from experience, I know they will do GREAT spring into summer!
Also, sunflowers reseed! I love plants which reseed. You cannot control where they will come up though! If you turn your soil (till it) you may not see one come up from the previous year. Just let your soil rest and you will have sunflowers come up naturally (just don't pull them thinking they are weeds LOL)
I have another question if you wouldn't mind. After they have died back for the season, do you cut them down to the ground, discard the entire thing or will they come back if left growing in the ground? Thanks for your help.
I have the Mammoth Russian Sunflower seeds but haven't planted them yet.I am in the South.Zone 7B.Should I plant them during this Fall or wait till Spring?I am excited and plan to build a play area for the kids in a circle of giant sunflowers.I also plan to collect them to roast and eat.Such fun!
nice vid …thanks for sharing it..i enjoyed it ….just have a question…where did you get the seeds for such a big sunflowers….my sunflowers are 1/5 the size of yours and on the package it said "Russian mammoth sunflowers"
Thank you! :))

are you guys using a cutco knife?
Thanks so much!
I like how you are able to share this experience with your boys. Having natural activities like this with your family, is just how the world should be. Keep up the good parenting skills. Your seeds came out great.
Funny!
I was thinking about someone making sunflower butter 30 mins ago
My first video on this channel.looks great. I'm a new subscriber.?
Guess goats are much like a lot of humans. Always want what they shouldn't have.?
nice?
It's amazing how destructive the can be, but its just there nature. Things will grow back. You will have your fence up in now time. ?
I see you have some pigs.
Sorry to hear about the fruit trees and the garden. Maybe that is why my grandparents had a fence around their vegetable garden that was also fenced off from where the animals were allowed to roam. Sort of a fence within a fence set up. Hope everything works out. God Bless and take care.?
A pity the goats escaped into your farm area, but they were just doing what animals do, eat what they can.?
Maybe the goats know what their likely ultimate fate may be so they're making hay whilst the sun shines. Can't blame them really. Sticken it to da man. ?
Sorry to see the damage the goats have done to the garden. Hannah must be dissapointed as she was doing such a good job on the weeding just the other day.Hopefully it will bounce back and you can plant some more. My daughter wanted to be a vet so we always had plenty of animals and it is fun watching them eat.?
Sorry about your garden. In our garden we get the dumb moose and bears. I don't argue with the Bears however….?
@Dallas L – YEs – we have! We actually already have the plans for building a Purple Martin House and plan on building a couple before spring 🙂 We appreciate the offer of a donation of one and if you really want to, we would accept. But we are going to build one or two as a family project so it's not necessary 🙂 That is a very generous offer and we really appreciate it 🙂 Thanks! Very sorry to hear about your mom.?
Have you thought about putting up a purple Martin house? I'll donate one to the farm 🙂 best thing my mom taught me was how to raise purple martins as they are such a joy … She passed this year and I got my first huge colony 🙂 ?
TWITTER SHARED.?
