You can grow, not only cucumbers vertically, but also squash and zucchini. I show you some examples and you can see how the vertical growth makes it easy for pest and disease sprays, inspection for insects and how adding a bird feed and bird bath lets the birds look over your plants and eat bad insects.

That chayote looks dry and the leaves are small. You should water it more often.
For the title, "How to grow Chayote Squash Vines" there was very little on how to grow them. How much do you water them? what kind of soil do they like? What climate do they grow best in? Will they over winter? Are they a perennial or an annual? maybe some items like that would help growers like me on how to grow Chayote Squash.
The best way to sprout chayote is the same as sweet potatoe, in a glass with water it grow very soon. The leafs are really nice in green smoothies.
You can flowers pollination of chayote squashes?
what kind of weather chayote like? can it stand full sun in the desert heat like New Mexico? how's about watering? thx
I also pronounce it as 'si oh teh'.
You can cook the chayote in a soup with chicken and ginger. But today I cooked the chayote differently. My daughter has the stomach flu so I cooked the chayote with ginger and boxed low salted chicken stock. I also added cut up scallions. Came out just as good but without the chicken. Best soup for nausea, stomach aches or being sick from a viral illness.
Good Video John for I learned how to grow them and eat them raw, except I still don't know how deep do I need to plant them in the ground and sadly, some of my sprouts died. :-(
I live in New Orleans, La. we grow this plant but call it mirliton. It makes a great casserole when seasoned with bread crumbs and seafood. Boiled, seeded and chopped with a lot of onions and a few spices.
Hii JOhn,
i grew this Chayote Squash that i bought from asia market twice, 2 years.. each time they sprouted and grow very fast, then they wilt and died.. i pulled them up and saw, barely much root .. maybe all rotten. and digged into the potted soil, found tones for bugs.. more like tiny white wranglers that i believe eating the rotted fruit… or maybe even eat up the root..
what is causing my squash to wilt and die ?is it my soil too wet ? is it because i bury the whole fruit in soil (after they sprouted long enough)… or is it because i sprout them in pot on window sill. ? i sprouted them in pot in my home because outside temperature is still too cold for them. 10 deg C and 4deg C at night..
pls teach me how and the condition for growing chayote squash, i don't wish to fail to grow them again this year.. this year may got early spring here in germany.
Thanks John,
Waiting for your favorable reply.
Truly
Andrew
If you're good at taking care of that it will bear a fruit or two every week. To utilize them so you have a constant supply you need to plant more.
You also eat the root is very good. Guatemalan eat it and call it Guisquil
do chayotes grow in las vegas and during what time?
that is how I eat it growing up very tasty
Chayote is frequently used in Latin cuisines my mom makes them stuffed with cheese and covered in a egg wash and fried, as well as in beef soup. I currently got my self a started plant by some neighbors who gave it to me so I am gonna plant it.
The spiney chayote is called! Chayote macho! The lite green is called chayote!
This old Louisiana/Mississippi boy knows these as Mirliton. Look in creole and cajun cookbooks for using the fruit. If you live in a warm climate, be careful. They will take over.
Thanks for the series.
I love chayotes
Hey, John. Have a serious ant problem with my chayote squash, cukes and watermelon plants. 🙁 Tried borax which helped some but didn't solve the problem entirely. Any ideas that might help? Thanks.
John, I don't comment on your videos but I do certainly appreciate them. Thank you and keep up the good work!
I love the idea about the tomato cage for squash!
Great videos…as always! What's the smallest size container you would use for cucumbers and squashes?
I just planted Japanese Cucumber and plan on using the 4-5' tall nylon trellis netting directly behind it. Been told it will support the Cuc's. Yes?
Your plants are looking great!
Only one pest we can never stop. Squash vine borer. We seem to get only a few squash early before it strikes. We then skip all summer and replant earlt Aug. to get a fair crop here in La. Gary..Has anyone truly found a way to prevent total devistation?
great idea to grow vertically. the spraying and using pesticides is not ideal for me. we go organic.
Hi Gary, does the ph level of soil effect seeds germination? I'm using peat moss and perlite mix .. Thx.
Wow this makes a lot more sense than letting it lay on the ground. AND I finally found a use for those smaller "tomato" cages!
what is "insect dust" that use use, is that sevin?
can you do this with melon??
Genius! haha will def be doing this next year
you just keep giving me new ideas, my gardening is transformed this year because of ideas like this.
