As I can see the horse manure is not rotted, is it worth trying laying down cardboard and topping it with a smothering of manure. The worms do all the work if you can wait long enough to complete the process you will also have a nice clean bed. It is certainly worth blending in the poultry muck to give it some balance as horse muck is the least useful muck.

Nice video!! Having a available source of manure really does help the soil…and will give that soil a extra boost. With the wood chip method one nice point is that you dont need to add tons of amendments…that breakdown of the wood chips gives your soil nutrients and nitrogen and carbon..a great balance. But as we always say..it never hurts to ADD if you have it available….and its a free source. Free sources are great! Will be waiting to see your plants thrive and produce!!! Thanks for sharing…

I enjoyed your video! I'm in Sacramento, the capital of California and I got some free horse manure from a ranch a couple years ago and it helped my soil a lot. This year I made some raised beds and am getting back into vegetable gardening so I appreciate your thoughts because after a lot of hard work you want to see results and doing things right really helps. Where I'm not planting I covered the soil with woods chips I got for free from landscapers who were trimming and chipping nearby. They usually pay to dump the chips so it is a good way to get free chips and save them money too. The only thing is to avoid it if they chip walnut tree wood because it is toxic to dogs I hear. So that's my two cents for everyone. Thanks for sharing your experience! Cheers! :-)

Hi Mark, This manure and woodchips should do great job with feeding plants and getting rid of the weeds, I'm planning to do the same for raspberry beds and it pain to weed it all the time.

Hello Mark,Good info again. Came in handy for my new garden beds. Just wondering as we are both in S.E.QLD is it too late for Tomato seed growing or should I just by seedlings from nursery? Also what about beans Is it too late to grow now?I have just made 2 planter boxes 1 meter long by 1/2 meter wide and will plant along trellis where morning & day sun shines but little hot afternoon sun.Another quickie.. Chillie plants  which is best for our area? We eat lots but last 4 years we had tiny red chillies but plant died when I reapplied compost (I think chicken manure too fresh for it).  Can't remember the name of the plant we had so will start again looking.

Enjoyed your video, as always! Horse manure here in the city is very expensive, so I just mix steer and chicken manure when I need them, also make a lot of my own compost – time consuming but cheap. Nice to see the views of your garden, very beautiful!

I really like these long "how to" videos. It really helps me to see how you do it, and seeing you at work inspires me, too! I'm in the Northern Hemisphere, so I have a lot of Spring work to get out there and do!

    Hi Mark
At the start, your bed didn't look like it had mulch. is this the first mulch or did it just brake down?
Also do you mulch each bed each year?
    Thanks in advance.
    Have a Jesus filled day
