“A house with a grass roof is quite a fantastic house to be in during a rough storm and hailey evening. In the evening it is quite fantastic. It just stands quite steady and easily on the ground because of the weight of the grass roof.”

“There are two reasons (why he is using a grass roof) the first is the aesthetic look. We wanted the grass roof to look nice and the second is the tradition. It is an old tradition in the Faroe islands so we asked our architect to get some solutions where we could combine the new style with the old fashion.”

“The problem is that it is (grass roof) quite heavy. On our roofs we have two layers of 8 cm of grass and in-between we have some nettings on the roots of the grass so we can grow and stabilise it. This construction takes allot of effort and weight. This roof will weigh about thirty tons and when it snows and when it is very wet it will be even heavier.”

“Here you have the waterproof membrane. 1st you put the grass against the waterproof membrane, the roof is up. You then put the fishing net up to the edges on the house. You then take the second layer of grass and put it over.”
