I am so frustrated with black spot on my roses. I have tried the latest thing i found, which was horticultural oil with a smidgen of baking soda added. Didn’t impede the black spot in the least. I am puzzled because we have had a pretty dry spring and usually damp weather encourages the blasted fungus. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

My garden is blooming away – not as profuse as I would like, but I have to deal with shade. I have iris blooming – traditional bearded in lavender and yellow flags. My knockout rose is blooming and one of the darker pink peonies. The lilies of the valley are just beginning to open – wow, they smell great!

I purchased horticultural oil and sprayed all my roses with it this weekend.

No, this is not organic – but I just got so tired of my roses failing with black spot.

Check out ’Jack Frost’, brunnera macrophylla for shade groundcover at the front of borders. Soil must be well tilled and kept moist.

What do you feed them, Pearl? I have had some problems with mine not blooming. I think I’m not feeding them correctly.

I’d like to hear about planting sweet peas in the Atlanta area. Has anyone had success?

Lynn, the year I planted them, I made a hillock and planted them near a support – a fence actually. They were oriented toward the South. They came out very well. My friends who live in Cornelia have also grown them successfully and I believe it’s because their summers are slightly cooler than here. They also have good luck with nasturtiums,…[Read more]

Lynn, here is a great article link from Renee’s seeds. While they concede that it is more difficult to grow them in the Southeast, they say it can be done.
